{"id":236348,"date":"2026-07-10T10:27:55","date_gmt":"2026-07-10T07:27:55","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghafla.co.ke\/ke\/?p=236348"},"modified":"2026-07-10T10:27:55","modified_gmt":"2026-07-10T07:27:55","slug":"drug-resistant-gonorrhea-shigella-infections-rising-among-homosexuals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghafla.co.ke\/ke\/drug-resistant-gonorrhea-shigella-infections-rising-among-homosexuals\/","title":{"rendered":"Drug-Resistant Gonorrhea (Shigella) Infections Rising Among Homosexuals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"PDq2pG_selectionAnchorContainer\" data-start=\"69\" data-end=\"368\">A drug-resistant strain of <strong data-start=\"96\" data-end=\"108\">Shigella<\/strong>, a bacterial infection that affects the intestines, is spreading through sexual networks among some gay and bisexual men in the United Kingdom, according to a new study by researchers from the University of Cambridge and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"370\" data-end=\"520\">The findings raise concerns about the growing spread of antibiotic-resistant infections and the limited treatment options available for some patients.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"1apcwfq\" data-start=\"522\" data-end=\"552\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"526\" data-end=\"552\">Cases Continue to Rise<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"554\" data-end=\"749\">The study found that England recorded <strong data-start=\"592\" data-end=\"650\">2,560 sexually transmitted Shigella infections in 2025<\/strong>, an increase from <strong data-start=\"669\" data-end=\"692\">2,318 cases in 2024<\/strong> and <strong data-start=\"697\" data-end=\"714\">2,052 in 2023<\/strong>, indicating a steady upward trend.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"751\" data-end=\"1071\">Researchers also discovered that sexually transmitted strains spread over much greater distances than infections linked to contaminated food or international travel. On average, related sexually transmitted cases were separated by <strong data-start=\"982\" data-end=\"1000\">117 kilometres<\/strong>, compared with <strong data-start=\"1016\" data-end=\"1033\">46 kilometres<\/strong> for non-sexually transmitted strains.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"onxm2o\" data-start=\"1073\" data-end=\"1110\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"1077\" data-end=\"1110\">Growing Antibiotic Resistance<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1112\" data-end=\"1204\">Researchers warned that antibiotic resistance is becoming an increasingly serious challenge.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1206\" data-end=\"1341\">More than <strong data-start=\"1216\" data-end=\"1231\">70 per cent<\/strong> of sexually transmitted Shigella strains were found to be resistant to at least one commonly used antibiotic.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1343\" data-end=\"1574\">The situation is particularly concerning for <strong data-start=\"1388\" data-end=\"1407\">Shigella sonnei<\/strong>, with more than half of the identified cases classified as <strong data-start=\"1467\" data-end=\"1497\">extensively drug-resistant<\/strong>, significantly reducing the number of effective treatment options available.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1576\" data-end=\"1774\">The study also found that up to one-third of people who contract the infection through sexual transmission require hospital treatment, with most patients remaining in hospital for four to five days.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"tkz6it\" data-start=\"1776\" data-end=\"1804\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"1780\" data-end=\"1804\">How Shigella Spreads<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"1806\" data-end=\"1945\">Shigella is transmitted through the <strong data-start=\"1842\" data-end=\"1863\">faecal-oral route<\/strong>, meaning infection occurs when bacteria from faeces enter another person&#8217;s mouth.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1947\" data-end=\"2113\">Health experts say this can happen during oral-anal sexual contact, through the sharing of sex toys, or via hand-to-mouth contact after touching the genitals or anus.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2115\" data-end=\"2273\">Symptoms typically develop within one to three days after exposure and may include severe or bloody diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever above 38\u00b0C, and vomiting.<\/p>\n<h3 data-section-id=\"c83z46\" data-start=\"2275\" data-end=\"2296\"><span role=\"text\"><strong data-start=\"2279\" data-end=\"2296\">Health Advice<\/strong><\/span><\/h3>\n<p data-start=\"2298\" data-end=\"2543\">The UK&#8217;s National Health Service (NHS) and the Terrence Higgins Trust are urging anyone experiencing symptoms to avoid sexual activity until at least <strong data-start=\"2448\" data-end=\"2493\">two weeks after they have fully recovered<\/strong> to reduce the risk of transmitting the infection.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2545\" data-end=\"2727\">They also recommend using condoms or dental dams during oral, anal and digital sexual activity and encourage anyone with symptoms to seek medical attention at a sexual health clinic.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2729\" data-end=\"2912\">Health professionals advise requesting a <strong data-start=\"2770\" data-end=\"2796\">Shigella-specific test<\/strong>, rather than assuming the illness is ordinary food poisoning, to ensure timely diagnosis and appropriate treatment.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2914\" data-end=\"3093\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Researchers say the findings highlight the importance of continued surveillance, early testing and responsible antibiotic use to help slow the spread of drug-resistant infections.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A drug-resistant strain of Shigella, a bacterial infection that affects the intestines, is spreading through sexual networks among some gay and bisexual men in the United Kingdom, according to a new study by researchers from the University of Cambridge and the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA).
