Kenya Tops Global Rankings in ChatGPT Adoption, Surpassing UAE and Israel

Kenya has officially taken the global lead in ChatGPT usage, with a remarkable 42.1% of internet-connected adults using the AI tool every month—a significant milestone in the worldwide embrace of artificial intelligence.

According to a Q2 2025 survey by Datareportal, Kenya narrowly edged out the United Arab Emirates (42.0%) and Israel (41.4%), cementing its position at the forefront of the global AI revolution.

Why is Kenya Leading the AI Surge?

Tech analyst Moses Kemibaro, speaking to TUKO.co.ke, explained several key factors fueling Kenya’s dominance in AI adoption:

  • Young, Digitally Savvy Population: With a median age of about 20, Kenya’s population is dominated by Gen Z and millennials—generations known for quickly adopting new technologies.

  • Affordable Mobile Internet Access: Kenya’s widespread and low-cost mobile internet has made online tools like ChatGPT easily accessible across diverse economic backgrounds.

  • Thriving Gig Economy: A large number of freelancers and gig workers in Kenya use ChatGPT for tasks such as writing reports, drafting emails, and brainstorming business ideas to boost productivity.

  • Strong Academic Engagement: Students have also embraced ChatGPT for essay writing, exam preparation, and research, driving significant monthly usage.

  • Free Access Tier: The availability of a free usage plan has helped remove cost barriers, encouraging widespread adoption.

“Kenya’s median age is around 20. Gen Z and millennials are driving adoption,” said Kemibaro.
“Professionals use it to clean up emails, generate reports, code, and ideate. It’s become a critical productivity tool.”

Global Comparison: How Other Countries Stack Up

The Datareportal survey reveals a striking global contrast. While Kenya leads, other nations also show high usage levels, particularly in the Middle East.

However, in traditionally tech-forward nations, ChatGPT adoption is significantly lower:

  • United States – 19.1%

  • United Kingdom – 17.9%

  • Japan – 5.8%

From university campuses to emerging tech startups, Kenyans—especially the youth—are proving that artificial intelligence isn’t just a futuristic concept. It’s already a deeply integrated part of their everyday lives.

Whether for education, work, or entrepreneurship, Kenya’s rapid adoption of ChatGPT showcases its potential to shape the future of AI in Africa and beyond.
