Cassper Nyovest is of the opinion that SA rappers are bigger than their Nigerian counterparts.<\/h3>\n

South Afrrican rapper, Cassper Nyovest who won the the Best Hip Hop act award at the just concluded Soundcity MVPs<\/strong><\/a> has shared his thoughts on Nigerian Rap.<\/p>\n

The rapper who spoke with Pulse.ng talked about Hip Hop in Africa. He stated that Hip Hop is not an African thing and is optimistic that Africans will one day find a sound that is peculiar to them.<\/p>\n

He agreed with M.I, however that South African rappers are bigger that those from Nigeria. Nigerian rappers are relatively unknown in South Africa, he said.<\/p>\n

Excerpts Below;<\/h3>\n

On Hip Hop culture in Africa:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

We have to understand that it is not our culture. Hip-hop is not an African thing.\u00a0It is American, and right now the sound in Africa is very African and Afrobeats. That\u2019s what people are listening to right now. So when you come to rap on a Trap beat or a Hip-hop beat, you are already removing yourself from so many ears.<\/p>\n

But at the same time, we dress the same as the Afrobeats guys and they listen to Hip-hop. So I believe we will get to a point where we will find our own sound or our own way of doing it. And have our people appreciate it.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On the rivalry between SA & Nigerian rap:<\/strong><\/p>\n

Yes, South African Hip-hop is in the forefront of African Hip-hop in general. It might not be as popular as it is in South Africa in Nigeria. But I know for a fact that the rappers from Nigeria are kinda unknown in SA.\u00a0If we talk about crossing over, I know that a lot of people in Nigeria know about my music. I know that in Kenya and Ghana it\u2019s the same thing.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m not just talking about me, I\u2019m talking about the movement.\u00a0Sarkodie<\/strong>\u00a0is big in Ghana, but are there other rappers who are as big as Sarkodie from Ghana? The South African Hip-hop movement is big across, also in London, New York\u2026we are out there performing in different countries.<\/p>\n

Me saying that might offend people here. They might feel that I\u2019m taking shots at Nigerian music. But that\u2019s not the deal. If we are to discuss in terms of numbers and appeal across the world, it\u2019s just the way it is.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On M.I\u2019s call for rappers to infuse more rap in their music:<\/strong><\/p>\n

\n

If I decide to rap on a beat like Davido<\/strong>\u2019s \u201cFall<\/strong><\/em><\/a>\u201c, which is more like Afro-pop, is it not Hip-hop? I don\u2019t know, I\u2019m not the one who came up with a set of rules. For me, it\u2019s still Hip-hop because it is a rapper. I can decide to rap on anything. I just use it as a beat and rap on it. It doesn\u2019t have to be a certain kind of beat.<\/p>\n

At the end of the day, it\u2019s each to his own. If M.I feels like that\u2019s his opinion, that\u2019s his opinion. For me, anyone can rap in any language that is dope. If you say it\u2019s Hip-hop, then it is Hip-hop.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n

On rappers deciding to do more of singing:<\/strong><\/p>\n

It\u2019s none of my business. I don\u2019t think rappers must not sing. If you want to sing, you could sing. But if you are a rapper, we still need to hear you rap. You can\u2019t sing all the time. We have to hear you rap because you need to rap for us to call you a rapper. If you sing all the time that means you are a singer now.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/blockquote>\n
