Octopizzo is Not All About Music. How His Initiative is Helping Kibera Youth

Octopizzo appeared on a VOA feature where he explains how the 2007 election violence inspired him to give back to his community. “To help the ideas and the networks that you have for everbody to get something, for everybody to get airtime. So, that’s how I work.”

And his approach for Young, Gifted & Black, an initiative where he reaches out to the community through music, dance, crafts and sport, “The idea was just to use art to change the youth because nowadays you can’t go and preach to the youth and tell them to change or you will not go to heaven. They don’t care. The youth want to be entertained first, then you put yourself on their level and you share the same stories that they’re going through.”

Octopizzo will be performing at the Kisima Awards tonight where he stands a chance to win Kshs. 2 million if he is named artiste of the year. Check out the full VOA feature below.
