Olunga responds to hater mocking him for building Kileleshwa apartment block
Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga is once again trending—this time not for his exploits on the pitch, but for a fiery exchange with a fan that has lit up social media.
The Kilimani Project Debate
Olunga, popularly known as The Engineer, recently posted a photo of himself at a construction site in Nairobi’s upscale Kilimani area. Wearing a blue safety helmet, a black t-shirt, and grey trousers, he stood in front of a towering multi-storey building still under construction. The structure, wrapped in scaffolding and green netting, appeared to be in its final stages, with exposed brickwork and unpainted walls hinting at progress.
He captioned the post: “Blessed Sunday. Tupo site, kata simu. Like Prince Indah said, hatuna midomo mingi, ni kazi tu.” The message drew a flood of congratulatory remarks from fans, but it also sparked skepticism.
One user, Ke Mike, downplayed the suggestion that Olunga owned the property, commenting: “Najua unataka tufikirie ni yako… unfortunately hatuezi.”
Olunga’s clapback was swift and savage: “Utafikiria aje na hauna akili?”
The blunt retort immediately went viral, with many netizens applauding his unapologetic response, while others weighed in on the celebrity culture of flaunting wealth.
From Local Leagues to Global Stardom
Beyond his social media fire, Olunga’s career remains a testament to consistency and hard work. He began at Liberty Sports Academy, where his 32 goals in 2012 earned his team promotion. He later had spells with Tusker FC and Thika United before joining Gor Mahia in 2015, helping the club clinch an unbeaten league title with 19 goals to his name.
His move abroad saw him shine at Swedish side Djurgårdens IF in 2016, where he scored 12 goals in his final 12 games, cementing a reputation as a clinical striker. He later played in China and then made history in Spain with Girona FC, becoming both the first Kenyan and the first Girona player to score a hat-trick in La Liga.
More recently, Olunga enjoyed a prolific spell with Qatar’s Al-Duhail, netting 117 goals in 124 appearances between 2021 and 2025. In June 2025, he signed with Al-Arabi SC on a two-year contract, where he continues to lead the attack.
National Pride
For the Harambee Stars, Olunga has been just as influential. With 67 appearances and 34 goals, he has equaled Dennis Oliech’s long-standing scoring record for Kenya, cementing his place as one of the country’s greatest footballers.
While his legacy on the field is secure, Olunga’s fiery Kilimani clapback shows that off the pitch, he is just as capable of commanding headlines.
