We put them on a diamond encrusted pedestal. They show up on the red carpet in their favorite designer dresses, Louboutin heels with hand placed Swarovski crystals and hair made up into an elegant up do. Their appearance could make a whole room lose their breath and we envy their seemingly perfect and charmed lives.

But when the curtains fall, when the red carpet is pulled out, behind the glitz and glamor these celebrities enjoy lies a sinister past. A  past so dark that it would make most of us shudder, tremble at the thought of another human being going through such a harrowing experience.

Ruth reveals that despite us thinking that she is the luckiest girl around with such a great dad, things were not always like that.

This is because her parents who had her in high school drifted apart and each went on their way and got married .Ruth was not so lucky as she became the victim of her step-father who was physically abusive. She says that My stepdad on the other hand hated me. He would beat me up and my mama wasn’t spared the beatings either. I wasn’t enrolled in school at all. I was required to do the housework and I was barely a child myself.
I would cook fetch water and firewood while taking care of my siblings. I had never worn shoes.”

Her chance for redemption came when her mum agreed that she should move to Nairobi to live with her dad, the actor, Abel Amunga. Her mother passed away a month later and she was not informed of her death until much later.

Life in Nairobi was great at first until her step-mum changed and began mistreating her .The step-mum later packed all her belongings and the household items and left .After that incidence, Ruth’s dad vowed not to remarry until she was  a grown up and has since then  been her rock and  her counselor .

As heartbreaking as her childhood was, Ruth’s story shows that in spite of hardship and pain, with hope and determination we can overcome a dark past and achieve our dreams.
