This, she says, impacted the way she views love.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Pearl Thusi speaks about how witnessing the abuse her mother affected her as a child at the <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/MercuryUnileverWomensDayLunch?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#MercuryUnileverWomensDayLunch<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/SayNoToGenderViolence?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">#SayNoToGenderViolence<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/cqT4EfqKNo\">pic.twitter.com\/cqT4EfqKNo<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; The Mercury\u2122 (@TheMercurySA) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TheMercurySA\/status\/1025491374848790529?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">August 3, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p>In a video from the event, Thuso is heard saying:\u00a0&#8220;as a teenager, I swore never to marry a black man\u00a0because at the time, they were the only ones that I was exposed to and they were the reason I was able to witness women being abused&#8230; Of course [now] I know better but&#8230; As a child, I had made that decision.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"block-paragraph\">\n<div class=\"rich-text\">\n<div class=\"block-paragraph\">\n<div class=\"rich-text\">\n<p>&#8220;So what I&#8217;m saying, by looking at my mother&#8217;s abuse and what I went through in particular&#8230; we need to stop comparing pain. Abuse is abuse, it needs to be nipped in the bud.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Pearl recounted her story of begging her mother to leave. At this point, she could not hold back her tears and she broke down.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"550\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">&quot;Excluding ourselves and making excuses because of shame is not necessary.
