{"id":18851,"date":"2019-02-14T06:56:51","date_gmt":"2019-02-14T03:56:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghafla.com\/ug\/?p=18851"},"modified":"2019-02-13T19:59:51","modified_gmt":"2019-02-13T16:59:51","slug":"prof-nawangwe-wants-makerere-school-of-law-closed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghafla.co.ke\/ug\/prof-nawangwe-wants-makerere-school-of-law-closed\/","title":{"rendered":"Prof Nawangwe wants Makerere school of law closed"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>Makerere University vice chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe on Tuesday asked the university to close School of Law indefinitely for allegedly being defiant and continuing with the sit-down strike.<br \/>\nProf Nawangwe accuses the School of Law dons of deliberately refusing to return to class to teach and inciting their fellow colleagues to continue with the strike despite some lecturers in other colleges resuming work.<br \/>\n\u201cAll colleges have since resumed full teaching except the School of Law where no teaching has been reported. The continued defiance by the School of Law, means that the students will not be taught for a fourth week running and this is likely to lead to a deterioration of discipline among the students with unforeseen consequences,\u201d reads part of Prof Nawangwe\u2019s report to the university council, the top governing body.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>\u201cGiven the position taken by the School of Law, to defy authority and incite the rest of the University to follow their bad example, it is recommended that the School of Law be closed indefinitely. The staff should be required to hand over University property and the students advised to return home and await further instructions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recommendation to have the school closed followed a directive by the council chairperson, Ms Lorna Magara requiring the vice chancellor to provide the council with a status report, clearly enumerating the actions taken to resolve the impasse between management and staff.<br \/>\nIn his report, a copy of which this publication has seen, Prof Nawangwe said that they have engaged in numerous meetings with the striking staff and the students\u2019 leadership to resolve the impasse and return the university to normalcy.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>He however notes that despite the fact that engagements are ongoing, the standoff is still in place predominantly in the School of Law.<br \/>\nThe university council meeting where Nawangwe presented the report is still underway.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p>The council summoned the school&#8217;s Principal, Associate Prof Christopher Mbazira.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"social-networks noprint\"><i class=\"fa fa-twitter\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>\u00a0<i class=\"fa fa-facebook\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>\u00a0<i class=\"fa fa-google-plus\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>\u00a0<i class=\"fa fa-linkedin\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>\u00a0<i class=\"fa fa-print\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i>\u00a0<i class=\"fa fa-envelope-o\" aria-hidden=\"true\"><\/i><\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Makerere University vice chancellor, Prof Barnabas Nawangwe on Tuesday asked the university to close School of Law indefinitely for allegedly being defiant and continuing with the sit-down strike.
