How Abel and Phil Earned Millions from Their Sh12 Million Budget Film

Actor and scriptwriter Abel Mutua has disclosed how his production company, Phil-It, co-owned with fellow filmmaker Phillip Karanja, earned millions in profit from their latest film, Makosa Ni Yangu, released last month.

Abel revealed that while the film’s production cost exceeded Sh12 million, they managed to break even and generate significant profits.

“Makosa Ni Yangu cost us over Sh12 million to produce. This figure doesn’t include the premiere event, which also brought in an equivalent amount,” Abel shared.

Of the Sh12 million budget, Abel and Phillip only financed half, with the remaining amount coming from contributions made by their loyal online film community and fan base.

“After the success of our first film, A Grand Little Lie, produced during the Covid-19 pandemic as a trial project, we decided to shift our approach. Instead of spending months or years seeking funding, we turned to our community, which appreciates and supports our content,” Abel explained.

For A Grand Little Lie, the duo earned over Sh3 million by selling 17,000 streaming links at Sh200 each. The revenue not only recovered their investment but also left them with surplus funds to produce another project.

Although Abel did not reveal the exact number of streaming links sold for Makosa Ni Yangu, which are priced at Sh250 on the Phil-It website, he confirmed that the project has been immensely successful, yielding substantial profits once again.

To boost their earnings, Abel and Phil hosted a premiere event in Nairobi, attended by 6,000 people. Tickets for the sold-out event were priced at Sh2,500 each, generating Sh15 million in revenue.
