Daylight Horror: Father Killed in Targeted Shooting
A quiet residential street in Stanley, County Durham, was shattered by violence on Saturday afternoon when a 60-year-old father was fatally shot through a downstairs window. The chilling incident, captured on video and widely circulated on social media, has left the community reeling.
The footage depicts two individuals approaching a terraced house on Elm Street at 5:17 PM. One of them breaks a window, while the other produces a firearm and fires a shot. The two then flee the scene as panicked cries erupt from within the house, including shouts of “they killed my dad.”
Durham Constabulary officers arrived at the scene at approximately 5:20 PM, responding to reports of a “disturbance.” Despite paramedics’ efforts, the victim, identified locally as Barry Dawson, also known as “Buck,” was pronounced dead at the scene.
Police have arrested a 37-year-old man and a 35-year-old woman on suspicion of conspiracy to murder.
Residents expressed shock and fear following the incident. One neighbor described the shooting as “terrifying,” fearing for her safety and that of her young daughter. Another neighbor remarked on the victim’s character, remembering him as a “really, really lovely guy” who was always helpful and friendly.
“Everyone knew him, and I don’t think anyone said a bad word about him,” one resident shared. “He was a working man and never in any trouble.”
The victim, a painter and decorator, was described as a friendly and well-liked member of the community. “He would always buy us a drink when he was in the club,” one woman said, “We would chat all the time.”
The victim’s family is receiving support from specialist officers.
Police have cordoned off the scene, and forensic investigations are underway. Detective Superintendent Neil Fuller appealed for information, urging anyone with details to come forward.
“Our officers are carrying out extensive enquiries, and I am grateful for the support and cooperation we have received from the community so far,” Fuller stated. “Our thoughts remain with the man’s family at this time.”
The North East Ambulance Service confirmed their attendance at the scene, deploying multiple resources, including the Great North Air Ambulance Service.
