Mike Sonko Crashes His Lexus After Arsenal’s Champions League Exit, Bahati Faces Dreadlock Dilemma
Former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has made headlines once again—this time for crashing his luxury Lexus SUV into a wall following Arsenal’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Paris Saint-Germain (PSG).
Sonko, a passionate and outspoken Arsenal supporter, had earlier promised to smash his vehicle if the Gunners were eliminated by PSG. True to his word, he followed through after Arsenal’s 2-1 loss in the second leg, which saw them bow out with a 3-1 aggregate defeat.
“Today is today, Arsenal must beat PSG… If we are defeated today, this car will go into the wall. That is loyalty,” Sonko declared in a pre-match video filmed while driving at night along the Nairobi–Nakuru highway.
Sonko Crashes the Car—Then Shares Aftermath
Hours later, Sonko posted a second video, this time in darkness, with only his voice narrating what had happened. He claimed to have rammed his car into a wall, showing damage to the front and dashboard lights, though he insisted he was unharmed.
“Arsenal, we’ve been defeated. I’ve crashed this car into a wall… the car is completely gone, but God loves me very much,” Sonko was heard saying, his tone a mix of regret and frustration.
Despite the dramatic gesture, many online questioned whether the crash was genuine or staged for attention—a trademark move for the flamboyant politician known for his theatrics.
Bahati’s Hair on the Line
Sonko wasn’t the only Kenyan celebrity emotionally invested in Arsenal’s performance. Musician Bahati Kioko had vowed to shave off his 10-year-old dreadlocks if Arsenal failed to reach the Champions League final.
“I have agreed with @diana_marua that if Arsenal loses this Wednesday’s game, I shave my 10-year dreadlocks,” Bahati posted before the match.
After the game, Bahati shared a comedic video of his wife Diana Marua pinning him down with a pair of scissors in hand, seemingly preparing to fulfill the promise. However, it’s still unclear whether he will actually go through with it or if the video was just another prank.
Fans React
Both incidents sparked a wave of reactions online, with fans divided between amusement and concern. While some praised Sonko’s loyalty, others questioned the wisdom of risking life and property over a football match.
As for Bahati, many fans are still waiting to see whether his symbolic gesture will be completed—or quietly forgotten.
Either way, Arsenal’s defeat has left a trail of broken hearts—and potentially broken promises—among its Kenyan faithful.
