Autopsy Reveals Severe Crush Injuries As Cause Of Death For Cyrus Jirongo

A postmortem examination has concluded that former Cabinet Minister Cyrus Jirongo died from severe blunt force trauma and crush injuries to the chest following a high-impact road accident in Naivasha last week.

The findings were released on Wednesday, December 17, 2025, at the Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi. Government Pathologist Dr. Johansen Oduor, working alongside family-appointed experts, detailed the extensive internal damage sustained by the politician. According to the report, Jirongo suffered a perforated heart, multiple rib fractures, and massive internal bleeding within the chest cavity. The impact also resulted in severe abdominal injuries, two fractures to his right hand, and fractures to both of his lower limbs.

Family physician Dr. Martin Wanyoike, a cardiologist, noted that the trauma was too catastrophic for any medical intervention to be successful.

“I witnessed a very severe injury to the heart, and those injuries are not compatible with life,” Dr. Wanyoike stated, offering his condolences to the bereaved family.

As the medical cause of death is established, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) is intensifying its probe into the circumstances of the crash. Detectives have reviewed CCTV footage from a petrol station near the scene of the December 13 accident. The footage shows Jirongo’s vehicle entering the station at 2:18 a.m. and attempting to make a right turn back toward Nairobi just a minute later. At 2:19 a.m., a PSV bus belonging to Climax Company Ltd rammed into his car, pushing it 25 meters from the point of impact.

The driver of the bus has been re-summoned for further questioning as police determine if there was any negligence involved. Additionally, investigators are retracing Jirongo’s final movements, including recording statements from individuals who attended a meeting with him at the Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi earlier that night.
