New Year Tragedy As 16-Storey Building Collapses In Nairobi’s South C Estate, Trapping People

A somber start to 2026 unfolded in Nairobi on New Year’s Day after a 16-storey residential building under construction collapsed in the South C neighborhood.

The incident occurred early on the morning of January 1, 2026, in the Shopping Centre area. While official casualty figures have yet to be confirmed, there are significant fears that several workers or individuals near the site may be trapped under the debris.

Emergency Response Underway

The Kenya Red Cross Society confirmed the disaster, stating that a multi-agency rescue team—comprising emergency services, security forces, and disaster management experts—was deployed immediately to the scene.

“Early this morning, a building under construction collapsed in the Shopping Centre area of South C, Nairobi County. A multi-agency response team is on site managing the situation,” the Red Cross statement read.

Current efforts are focused on search and rescue, site assessment and investigation

The Changing Face of South C

South C, located approximately 6 kilometers from Nairobi’s Central Business District, has long been a popular residential hub. Bordered by Wilson Airport and Nairobi National Park, the area is traditionally known for maisonettes and gated communities.

However, recent years have seen a massive surge in high-rise developments. The estate also serves as a strategic administrative zone, housing the headquarters of the Kenya Red Cross, the National Environmental Management Authority (NEMA), and the DCI Training School.

This latest collapse raises urgent questions about the safety of the rapid vertical expansion currently taking place in Nairobi’s residential suburbs.
