Janet Mbugua has sparked conversation after questioning how people continue to spend despite widespread claims that times are tough.

She noted that although many complain about financial strain, everyday life appears largely unchanged, with people still travelling, going out, and making social plans. This contrast, she said, has left her curious about how individuals are managing their finances.

According to Janet, the gap between what people say and what is visibly happening does not quite add up. Social spaces remain busy, and lifestyles appear active, prompting her to reflect on what could be sustaining this trend.

“I have a genuine question… how are people making money right now?” she posed on Tuesday, March 24, 2026.

She suggested that the answer may not lie in a single, obvious source of income. Instead, she believes many people could be relying on multiple streams or unconventional ways to maintain their lifestyles, even if they are not openly discussed.

“Because we keep saying things are tight, but life is still very much… happening. People are travelling, outside is full, plans are being made… so what exactly is going on?” she added.

Shifting Financial Habits

Janet observed that people may be quietly adapting, combining different strategies to stay afloat. While these approaches may not be immediately visible, she believes they are enabling many to keep up with their daily lives.

“You start to realise it is not one obvious thing. It’s a bit of this, a bit of that… people just moving smart, quietly figuring things out,” she said.

She added that observing others often leads to personal reflection, prompting individuals to question their own financial situations and consider whether they might be missing something.

“But then you look at your own life like… okay, what am I missing?” she remarked.

Janet clarified that her thoughts are driven more by curiosity than concern, noting that the situation feels unusual and points to a possible shift in how people are earning and managing money.
