Weather Alert- Heavy Rains And Strong Winds Forecast For Several Regions

The Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) has issued a fresh weather update, warning of enhanced rainfall and high-wind speeds across various parts of the country. According to the forecast, the period between Sunday night, May 3, and Monday evening, May 4, will see intensified weather activity, particularly over the Highlands on both sides of the Rift Valley.

Storms in the West and Rift Valley

The Highlands West of the Rift Valley, the Lake Victoria Basin, and the Rift Valley are expected to experience widespread showers and thunderstorms. Residents in counties such as Nakuru, Kisumu, Kakamega, Eldoret, and Narok should prepare for a mix of morning rains and more intense afternoon storms.

Rain Forecast for Nairobi and the East

In the Highlands East of the Rift Valley, including Nairobi County, cloudy conditions will dominate. While the morning may offer brief sunny intervals, showers are expected to break out in the afternoon across Nairobi and neighboring counties like Kiambu, Nyeri, and Meru.

Wind Warning for Northern and Lowland Regions

The Met Department has also flagged potential safety concerns due to strong winds. Southerly to southeasterly winds exceeding 25 knots (12.5 m/s) are anticipated in the following areas:

  • Northwestern: Parts of Turkana County.

  • Northeastern: Marsabit, Garissa, and Isiolo.

  • Southeastern Lowlands: Expect gusty conditions alongside morning rains.

Regional Outlook at a Glance

  • Northwestern (Turkana, Samburu): Primarily sunny with afternoon showers in a few areas; heavy winds in Turkana.

  • Northeastern (Mandera, Wajir, etc.): Morning rains followed by sunny intervals in the afternoon.

  • Coast & Lowlands: Partly cloudy nights with a chance of showers in select locations.

With rainfall intensity increasing in the Highlands, the public is advised to stay updated on local conditions and be wary of potential flash floods in low-lying areas.
