Lupita Nyong’o Fires Back At Elon Musk And Critics Over Recent Movie Role
Academy Award-winning actress Lupita Nyong’o has finally broken her silence regarding the intense online backlash—including pointed criticism from billionaire tech mogul Elon Musk—over her casting in Christopher Nolan’s highly anticipated cinematic epic, The Odyssey.
The controversy ignited after it was revealed that Nyong’o would be taking on the dual roles of Helen of Troy and her sister, Clytemnestra, in the star-studded adaptation of Homer’s classic poem, which is slated for release on July 17, 2026.
The Spark: Elon Musk and Right-Wing Critics React
The casting decision quickly drew ire from conservative commentators and social media circles, who argued that casting a Black actress as Helen of Troy—traditionally mythologized as a fair-skinned, Greek figure whose face “launched a thousand ships”—amounted to Hollywood “race-swapping.”
Commentator Matt Walsh heavily criticized the choice on X (formerly Twitter), claiming that Nolan avoided casting a white actress out of fear of progressive backlash. Elon Musk directly weighed in on the conversation, replying “True” to Walsh’s post. In a separate exchange, Musk further alleged that Nolan’s casting choices were politically motivated, writing, “He wants the awards,” implying a play for Hollywood inclusion standards.
The rhetoric escalated on conservative media, with talk show host Megyn Kelly questioning why Hollywood was adapting “a book no one enjoyed in high school” and complaining that the role was being given to a Black woman despite ancient texts allegedly referencing a “pale-armed” beauty.
Lupita’s Defiant Response: “You Can’t Perform Beauty”
In an exclusive interview with Elle Magazine, Nyong’o completely dismissed the vitriol, refusing to waste energy defending her right to play the iconic character. Instead, she reframed the narrative around the artistic intent of the film.
“This is a mythological story,” Nyong’o stated bluntly. “I’m very supportive of Chris’s intention with it and with the version of this story that he is telling. Our cast is representative of the world. I’m not spending my time thinking of a defense. The criticism will exist whether I engage with it or not.”
When pressed on the immense pressure of portraying the ultimate symbol of historical beauty, the Black Panther star emphasized that her approach goes significantly deeper than surface-level aesthetics.
“You can’t perform beauty,” Nyong’o explained. “I want to know who a character is. What is beyond beauty? What is beyond looks? That’s the thing about doing such a well-known text… The research could be endless. I was so deeply honored to be entrusted with the role. I mean, she is iconic. What more can I say?”
Christopher Nolan Stands Firm
Director Christopher Nolan has similarly brushed off complaints regarding historical accuracy, firmly defending his decision to place Nyong’o at the center of his ancient world.
Nolan revealed that he was “absolutely desperate” to book the actress because she naturally commands the unique presence required for the legendary Spartan queen.
“Lupita makes it look effortless,” Nolan told Elle. “I’m sure there’s a tremendous amount of discipline and training that goes into projecting that kind of poise and feeling the emotion bubbling beneath the character… She’s just an incredible person to work with.”
An Epic Narrative for Modern Times
Shot entirely on IMAX 70mm cameras, The Odyssey boasts a dizzying, globally diverse ensemble cast including Matt Damon, Anne Hathaway, Tom Holland, Zendaya, and Charlize Theron.
Addressing the massive scale of the production, Nyong’o noted that a diverse cast is exactly what an expansive, timeless story demands. “It spans worlds. So that’s why the cast is what it is. We’re occupying the epic narrative of our time,” she concluded, adding a final note of personal resilience: “I can’t spend my time thinking about all the people who still don’t love me.”
