Kenya Weather Alert: Rainfall, Cold Conditions and Strong Winds Expected as Health Risks Rise

Kenya is expected to experience increased rainfall, cold conditions and strong winds between June 30 and July 6, 2026, according to the latest Weather-Health Weekly Update.

The Biometeorological Bulletin, which tracks the relationship between weather patterns and health risks, has warned Kenyans to take precautions as changing weather conditions may increase the risk of respiratory illnesses, vector-borne diseases and other weather-related health concerns.

Increased Rainfall Expected in Several Counties

Rainfall is forecast to increase over western Kenya and spread to parts of the Central and Southern Rift Valley as well as Central Kenya.

Weekly rainfall exceeding 50mm is likely in several counties, including Kisii, Nyamira, Kakamega, Vihiga, Kericho, Nandi, Bomet, Bungoma, Nakuru, Nyandarua, Trans Nzoia and Uasin Gishu.

Light rainfall is also expected in parts of the Coast region, including Kwale, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Tana River counties.

Cold Weather to Affect Highlands

Residents in the Highlands East and West of the Rift Valley, as well as the Central Highlands, have been advised to prepare for colder conditions.

Temperatures below 10°C are expected in parts of Nyandarua, including Nyahururu, as well as areas in Laikipia, Nyeri, Uasin Gishu (Eldoret), Narok, Trans Nzoia (Kitale) and Kericho.

The cold conditions are likely to increase the risk of respiratory illnesses, asthma complications and cardiovascular problems, especially among vulnerable groups.

Hot Conditions and Strong Winds Forecast

While some regions experience cold weather, parts of Turkana County are expected to record high temperatures exceeding 35°C.

Strong south-easterly winds of more than 25 knots are also expected in parts of Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Isiolo, Turkana, Mombasa, Kilifi, Lamu and Garissa counties.

The strong winds may increase dust levels, causing respiratory irritation and eye sensitivity, while also posing a risk of property damage in affected areas.

Health Risks Linked to Weather Changes

The bulletin identified respiratory illnesses, asthma and cardiovascular complications as high-risk concerns in cold regions.

Areas receiving rainfall may also face a moderate risk of vector-borne diseases such as malaria, chikungunya and dengue.

The risk of flooding, waterborne diseases, Rift Valley Fever and anthrax outbreaks remains low but residents have been urged to remain cautious.

Health Advisories

Authorities have advised Kenyans to:

  • Sleep under treated mosquito nets and clear stagnant water to reduce mosquito breeding.
  • Use safe drinking water and wear gumboots in wet areas.
  • Vaccinate livestock against anthrax and Rift Valley Fever.
  • Avoid eating meat from animals that die suddenly and only purchase meat from licensed butcheries.
  • Stay away from flooded areas and locations prone to landslides.
  • Avoid sheltering under trees during heavy rainfall.
  • Dress warmly during cold mornings and nights.
  • Stay hydrated in hot regions.
  • Wear masks where necessary to reduce dust inhalation during strong winds.

Residents have been encouraged to remain alert and follow weather updates as conditions change throughout the week.
