Burna Boy fires back at detractors complaining he kicked out sleepy couple
Grammy-winning Nigerian star Burna Boy has stirred fresh controversy after an incident during his ‘No Sign of Weakness’ tour stop in Denver, Colorado.
While performing at the iconic Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Burna Boy abruptly halted his set after noticing a couple in the front row. In a now-viral clip, the woman appears to be asleep — prompting the singer to call out her companion.
“Take her home… I’m not doing another song until you go home,” he declared, pointing directly at the pair.
The crowd reacted with a mix of shock, laughter, and boos, and moments later, security personnel escorted the couple out.
News of the confrontation spread quickly online. Supporters argued that Burna Boy expects energy and respect at his shows and has every right to address disengaged fans. Critics, however, condemned the move as unnecessary public humiliation, especially for someone who paid for a coveted front-row seat.
Others questioned why the singer didn’t first check whether the woman was ill, exhausted, or in distress.
Burna Boy responds to backlash
Amid mounting criticism, Burna Boy addressed the uproar during a livestream. He doubled down on his stance and made a blunt statement about the kind of supporters he wants.
“Did I tell you all to be my fans? I am only looking for fans who have money this period,” he said, insisting he is not begging for anyone’s loyalty.
He added that at this stage in his career, he’s focused on fans who can “meaningfully support” his work.
The woman’s explanation
The woman at the centre of the controversy later shared that she had been emotionally fragile. Reports indicate she was grieving the recent death of her child’s father and described her moment of fatigue as the result of severe emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion.
