Femi One responds to admirer begging her to be his sponyo
Image: Rapper Femi OneFemi One has given fans a glimpse into her private messages after sharing a bold request from a male admirer—an interaction that has since sparked conversation about shifting gender roles and financial expectations among young Kenyans.
A bold request for a “sponsor”
The fan, identified as Khamisi Masoud, reached out to the “Utawezana” hitmaker with an unusually direct proposal. In a series of messages, he asked the rapper to become his “sponsor” or “sugar mama.”
His request was detailed, asking for support in the form of clothing, rent for a bedsitter apartment, and even a monthly allowance for personal expenses.
“Can you be my sponsor please… unisupport in clothings na pia you rent me a bedsitter,” part of the message read, alongside a request for pocket money.
Femi One’s witty response
Rather than reacting harshly, Femi One chose humour. Sharing a screenshot of the exchange on her Instagram stories, she responded in a playful and dismissive tone, joking that she too is searching for financial support.
“Lucky you, even I am searching; if you find one, at least recommend me!” she replied.
She added a humorous twist by pairing the post with Sugar Mummy by Teni in the background.
A reflection of changing social dynamics
The exchange has drawn attention to the evolving “sponsor” or “sponyo” culture in Kenya, where financially stable individuals support younger partners’ lifestyles. Traditionally associated with older men, the trend is increasingly seeing a shift, with some young men openly seeking support from financially independent women.
This emerging dynamic reflects broader changes in societal expectations, challenging the long-held notion that men must always be the primary providers in relationships.
Economic realities and generational shifts
Analysts point to economic pressures, including high youth unemployment, as a key driver behind the trend. For some Gen Z individuals, such arrangements are viewed as a pathway to a more comfortable lifestyle.
The phenomenon continues to spark debate on social media platforms like X, with critics arguing it undermines traditional values, while others maintain that in a modern economy, financial roles in relationships should not be defined by gender.
