Janet Mbugua has sparked a wide conversation after sharing a candid reflection on the realities of modern adulthood.

In a message to her followers on Instagram, Mbugua described what she termed the “millennial crisis” as an overwhelming and often unexpected experience. She questioned why a generation that followed the traditional blueprint for success still finds itself deeply exhausted.

“The millennial crisis is wild, because how did we do everything ‘right’ and still end up this tired?” she posed.

Balancing Life and Inner Healing

The former news anchor and founder of Inua Dada Foundation noted that while millennials have much to be grateful for—including careers and families—the mental and emotional load remains significant.

She highlighted a defining struggle of this phase of life: balancing daily responsibilities with personal healing.

“Nobody warned us adulthood would feel like healing your inner child while answering emails, paying bills and still trying not to lose yourself in the process,” she shared.

According to Mbugua, many millennials are navigating the emotional work of addressing past experiences while simultaneously managing professional and financial demands.

Embracing Honesty

Mbugua emphasised the importance of being open about mental health challenges, suggesting that honesty is one of the healthiest steps her generation can take.

She described life as a mix of heavy and light moments, where some days are overwhelming while others bring humour and relief.

“Some days are heavy, some are hilarious. Most days are both… maybe being honest about it is the healthiest thing we can do,” she said, adding that despite the challenges, she would not trade being a millennial for anything else.

A Shared Global Experience

Her sentiments reflect a broader global trend, where millennials—typically those born between 1981 and 1996—are increasingly associated with burnout and high stress levels.

Studies, including the 2023 Deloitte Gen Z and Millennial Survey, indicate that a significant number of millennials frequently experience stress and anxiety, often linked to the rising cost of living and financial pressures.

Mbugua’s reflection captures this shared reality, highlighting the constant balancing act between responsibilities like paying bills and maintaining a sense of self in an increasingly demanding world.
