Larry Madowo reveals his unrealised Catholic priest ambitions
Larry Madowo has revealed that his journey to becoming a global journalist almost took a completely different direction, sharing that he once aspired to join the Catholic priesthood.
The CNN International Correspondent made the unexpected disclosure during a recent live broadcast, offering viewers a glimpse into a lesser-known chapter of his early life. Known for his sharp analysis and international reporting, Madowo said his initial dream was to serve in the Church.
A Different Calling
Madowo explained that he attended a Catholic seminary during his secondary school education—institutions typically run by priests and designed for young men considering a religious vocation. During that time, he was guided by a common phrase often shared by mentors: “Many are called, but few are chosen.”
Despite his early commitment, he eventually realised that the priesthood was not his path.
“I guess I was not chosen, and that’s why I do this now,” he said with a light-hearted tone.
From Seminary to Newsroom
In a humorous reflection, Madowo described his career in journalism as a “backup plan,” noting that his transition into media has ultimately worked out well.
“My backup option was this,” he joked, referring to his role at CNN. He added that he would still consider returning to the priesthood—if the opportunity ever arose. “If the pope calls me, I’ll come back,” he quipped.
Sharing the Story Beyond TV
The journalist later extended the conversation to social media, where he playfully revisited the topic and engaged his followers.
“Confession: I wanted to become a Catholic priest but failed. I’m explaining what happened for the first time. Is it too late or can I still go back?” he wrote.
Continuing to Tell African Stories
Today, Madowo remains a key figure at CNN, where he contributes to global coverage and highlights stories from across Africa and its diaspora. Through programmes like African Voices, he continues to spotlight innovation, creativity, and success stories from the continent.
His revelation adds a personal dimension to his public image, showing how a path that once seemed certain can evolve into something entirely different.
