MC Gogo Condemns Violence In Nairobi Protests, Urges Peace From Youth & Police

Lawrence Macharia, widely known as MC Gogo, a prominent Kenyan MC and influencer, has spoken out against the violence that marred protests in Nairobi on June 17, 2025.

Renowned for his electrifying stage presence and significant social media influence, Gogo used his platform to denounce the chaos and call for compassion from both the protesting youth and the police. The demonstrations, which began as peaceful expressions against government policies, escalated into violence when alleged hired goons infiltrated crowds, engaging in looting and attacking civilians.

Visibly shaken, MC Gogo addressed the youth in a heartfelt social media post.

“It’s heartbreaking to see our youth vandalizing and attacking fellow protesters or innocent people,” he said. “I saw an elderly man robbed. How did we get here?” Expressing dismay that young people, who are the backbone of the protests, were perpetrating violence, Gogo urged them not to be manipulated.

“Don’t take money to attack someone or destroy a business. They’re hustling like you, with their own struggles. Someone’s fighting for their future, and you harm them? That small payment for dirty work doesn’t help you.”

Gogo also appealed to police officers, many of whom follow him online, to exercise restraint. “To the cops: there are protocols for handling wrongs—arrest and charge, don’t shoot. I saw a video of someone shot, and it could’ve been anyone, just minding their business. It’s devastating.” He further called on officers to promote humane treatment among their colleagues.

Kenyans on X (formerly Twitter) responded passionately to his message. Supporters praised his stance, with comments like @NairobiVibe: “MC Gogo speaking facts! Youth and police need to hear this. Let’s unite for peace,” and @KenyaRising: “Respect to Gogo for calling out both sides. We need humanity now. #OneKenya.”

However, critics questioned his timing and sincerity. @TruthKE commented: “Gogo’s preaching peace, but where was he when protests started? Too late now,” while @CitySkeptic added: “Sounds good, but influencers like him thrive on attention. Is this genuine?”

MC Gogo concluded his message with a plea for unity: “We’re all human, one country, one people. Let’s live peacefully.”
