The long-standing animosity between former Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko and lawyer Miguna Miguna has escalated into a legal battle, with Miguna now threatening a defamation suit over explosive claims regarding his family’s past.

The feud ignited when Miguna publicly questioned the source of Sonko’s immense wealth after the former governor posted a video “parading” a cabinet filled with stacks of cash. Miguna suggested that Sonko’s riches were the product of “dubious means,” specifically citing alleged drug smuggling. Never one to shy away from a digital brawl, Sonko retaliated by targeting Miguna’s childhood and personal appearance.

Sonko alleged that Miguna was a “notorious criminal” during his youth in Nairobi’s Jerusalem estate, claiming the lawyer and his father were involved in housebreakings to steal television sets and refrigerators. Furthermore, Sonko offered a sensational explanation for Miguna’s signature look, claiming the lawyer wears a white cap to hide a “huge scar” sustained during a past violent encounter.

Through his law firm, Miguna has hit back, labeling the claims as malicious fabrications that have caused significant distress to his family and damage to his professional reputation. In a demand letter addressed to Sonko, Miguna’s legal team noted:

“You uttered and published as fact that the undersigned is a criminal, a burglar, a robber, and a violent person with a history of criminality… where he and his father were allegedly notorious criminals.”

The letter highlights that the viral nature of Sonko’s posts forced relatives to contact Miguna to verify the “notorious” allegations.
