Nairobi Paralyzed As Police Roadblocks Defy Court Order Ahead Of Maandamano

Thousands of Nairobi commuters faced severe disruption this Monday morning, July 7, as widespread police roadblocks brought major city roads to a standstill. The blockades, implemented despite a court order explicitly prohibiting such actions ahead of planned protests, hampered journeys into the Central Business District (CBD) and surrounding areas, leading to widespread delays and frustration.

Key affected routes included sections of Thika Road at Roysambu and Guri Nanak, Mombasa Road at GM Roundabout, and the Eastern Bypass at 75 Roundabout. Commuters on Waiyaki Way encountered similar gridlock at Kangemi and Museum Hill, while those on Kangundo Road were stalled at Njiru, near Mama Lucy Hospital, and at Donholm. Further blockades were reported on Jogoo Road at City Stadium and along Juja Road.

The extensive police presence effectively paralyzed crucial entry and exit points for the city, leaving countless residents stranded and unable to reach their workplaces.

Government Directives and Security Concerns

The police action coincides with planned “Saba Saba Day” protests organized by Gen Z activists, even as the government urged restraint from the public. Public Service CS Geoffrey Ruku had on Monday ordered all civil servants to report to work without fail, warning of stern action against non-compliance. Business owners were also encouraged to operate as usual, despite heightened tensions, with Interior CS Kipchumba Murkomen having promised assured security and safety on Sunday.

However, public service vehicles (PSVs) were either forced to reroute or completely halt operations upon encountering the major roadblocks. Only private vehicles were granted access, and then only after inspection. Notably, on Juja Road, Kenya Air Force officers from Moi Eastleigh Airbase were observed assisting police in manning the roadblocks.
