Oga Obinna Calls Out Government Over Poor Communication on New Laws

Media personality Oga Obinna has faulted the government for what he termed as inadequate communication with the public regarding new legislation, arguing that the lack of transparency has fueled confusion and mistrust among citizens.

Speaking during a public forum on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, convened to address growing concerns about President William Ruto’s Cybercrimes (Amendment) Act, Obinna said authorities must improve how they communicate legal changes before signing or implementing them.

“The information gap and the mistrust citizens have toward the government come from the lack of clear communication from the government side,” he said.

Obinna noted that many Kenyans were puzzled by the speed at which the Cybercrimes Bill was signed into law, questioning the urgency behind it.

“When this bill was passed and signed, many Kenyans were asking—why the rush? That same day, we lost someone very important globally. Why couldn’t the president wait? What was the emergency?” he asked.

Calls for Transparency and Public Awareness

Obinna further challenged leaders to take responsibility for keeping the public informed about policy and legislative developments, stressing that citizens should not have to chase government updates.

“People are asking—should it be the citizens’ job to follow up on what the government is doing?” he said. “We elected MPs and leaders to represent us and communicate openly about such matters.”

The entertainer’s remarks echo a broader public sentiment calling for greater openness, civic education, and consultation before major policy decisions are made — especially on laws that directly affect citizens’ rights and digital freedoms.
