Sifuna Gains Momentum As Preferred Presidential Candidate Over Gachagua In TIFA Poll
A new survey by TIFA Research released on Thursday, May 14, suggests that Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna is emerging as a formidable political figure, even outpacing former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in a potential head-to-head matchup.
While Sifuna has not yet officially declared his candidacy for the 2027 presidential race, his political profile has surged since March. This rise coincides with the launch of “Linda Mwananchi,” a faction of ODM members who have remained vocal critics of President William Ruto’s broad-based government arrangement.
A Tight Race for Influence
The poll reveals a shifting landscape among the top contenders and emerging challengers. In a hypothetical contest between Sifuna and the Democratic Christian Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, the Nairobi Senator leads with 10% of voter support, compared to 9% for Gachagua.
Despite Sifuna’s growing influence, the incumbent remains the man to beat. President William Ruto continues to lead the pack with 24% of Kenyans favoring his re-election. Trailing him in second place is Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who currently commands 19% preference.
The Rise of “Linda Mwananchi”
Analysts attribute Sifuna’s steady climb to his consistent stance against the current administration’s inclusivity strategy, which saw several ODM leaders join the Cabinet. By leading the “Linda Mwananchi” wing, Sifuna has positioned himself as a primary voice for the opposition base that feels unrepresented by the government’s recent political realignments.
As 2027 approaches, the data suggests that Sifuna’s refusal to endorse the broad-based government is resonating with a significant portion of the electorate, making him a key player to watch in the coming months.
