Seven university students who were arrested in connection with the tragic death of Daystar University student Lorna Kathambi Karani have been released after fresh CCTV evidence cleared them of any direct involvement.
The newly reviewed footage captured the final moments leading to the incident at Harmony Plaza in Ngara. It shows Lorna, who appeared intoxicated, attempting to jump from one balcony to another. While her friend managed to cross safely, Lorna slipped and plunged from the 11th floor, resulting in her death.
Night of Partying Turns Tragic
According to investigators, the group had been partying earlier on the 12th floor of the building. Security personnel had reportedly cautioned them several times due to loud noise complaints from other tenants.
In the immediate aftermath of the fall, the seven students were treated as potential suspects, prompting their arrest and detention as police sought answers regarding Lorna’s final hours.
CCTV Footage Shifts the Case
The newly obtained CCTV footage, however, has provided critical clarity. It shows that none of the students physically pushed, coerced or forced Lorna into the dangerous jump. The visual evidence indicates that her actions were self-initiated while under the influence.
With these findings, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) has advised against pursuing murder charges. Instead, the DPP has recommended that the matter proceed to a public inquest to establish a full and transparent account of what happened.
A Call for Answers
The incident has raised concerns about excessive drinking among young adults, safety protocols in high-rise buildings, and the pressures surrounding student nightlife in urban centres.
As the case moves to an inquest, Lorna’s family, friends and the wider university community continue to seek closure and a deeper understanding of the events that led to her untimely death.
