Friends of Kenyan woman who killed compatriot in Saudi Arabia speak up

A Kenyan woman has been arrested in Saudi Arabia for allegedly murdering a fellow citizen. The woman, who has been identified as Mercy Tomno alias Saumu, is said to have attacked the victim, Maureen, on a main road in Riyadh.

The attack was captured on video, which shows Saumu repeatedly slamming Maureen’s head on the tarmac before kicking and stepping on her face. The attack goes on until motorists stop at the scene and move towards where the commotion is taking place before the assailant walks away.

Police in Saudi Arabia revealed that the victim died while receiving treatment at a local hospital. According to Saudi Arabian law, murder attracts the death penalty and already those are the charges the suspect is facing.

Saumu’s friends and former schoolmates have described her as an outgoing woman who also has a love for the bottle. Saumu, who grew up in Eldoret, Uasin Gishu County, has also been described as very friendly.

“Saumu is very outgoing and she knows how to make friends. When we heard that she had been involved in a fight, I was shocked,” said a friend who grew up with her.

Saumu studied at a secondary school in Nangili, Kakamega County before she joined Rift Valley Technical Training Institute (RVIST). Thereafter she secured a job locally before she flew out of the country to seek greener pastures.

She went to Saudi Arabia where she was working as a house girl until she fled from her boss and decided to live with fellow Kenyans who had also fled from their employers.

“She fled from her boss and she is among Kenyans who usually rent houses in Riyadh. Here, we call it Kukemboi,” Ms Ann Njeri, a friend to Saumu, told Nairobi News.

The motive for the attack is still unclear, but police are investigating. Saumu is currently in police custody and is awaiting trial.

This is a tragic incident, and our thoughts are with the victim’s family and friends. We hope that justice will be served in this case.

Upsetting video of househelp urinating in boss’ cup

Kenyans have expressed revulsion over a two-part CCTV video showing a housekeeper urinating in a cup in her employer’s kitchen.

Videos published on TikTok by user IamErastus appear to have been shot around 5:57 am on July 17, 2023.

With its back to the door leading outside, the camera looks into the kitchen. The woman picks up a cup from the clean dishes while she is standing next to the sink and stoops down holding it.

To urinate, she lifts her skirt. She pees three times, then pours the urine on the kitchen sink.

She then rinses the cup and puts it back in the sink before bending over with a kitchen towel to clean up the urine splash on the floor.

At 1:17 minutes into the video, Kenyans are responding to how appalled they are that this might be a situation occurring elsewhere.

The house manager can be seen returning to her regular tasks and washing all the filthy dishes in the sink in the second footage provided by the CCTV.

Desperate Kenyans caught up in Finland scholarship scam threaten to strip naked

Police were called to control angry parents who were protesting against a Finland education scam in Uasin Gishu County. The parents had paid between Sh1.2 million and Sh3.5 million to the county government for their children to study in Finland, but only 200 students were able to travel. The remaining 300 parents are demanding a refund.

The Finland overseas education program was initiated during former governor Jackson Mandago’s tenure. The parents want Mandago to come out and explain what happened.

Current governor Jonathan Bii exonerated the county from the matter and said the program was handled by a private trust with the county only acting as a guarantor. Bii suspended three top county officials who were involved and the matter is also under probe by the EACC and the DCI.

The parents are advised to follow these steps to successfully apply for Finnish scholarships:

  1. Do your research. Before you apply for any scholarship, it is important to do your research and make sure that the scholarship is legitimate. There are many scams out there, so it is important to be careful.
  2. Meet the eligibility requirements. Each scholarship has its own eligibility requirements, so make sure that you meet them before you apply.
  3. Write a strong application. Your application should be well-written and should highlight your strengths and why you are a good fit for the scholarship.
  4. Follow up. After you submit your application, be sure to follow up with the scholarship provider to check on the status of your application.

The parents in Uasin Gishu are hoping that their children will be able to study in Finland one day. By following these steps, they can increase their chances of being awarded a scholarship.

Grenade Explosion in Nairobi Injures Garbage Collector

A 14-year-old garbage collector was seriously injured in a grenade explosion in Nairobi’s Embakasi neighborhood on July 6. The boy, James Onyango, was collecting trash from the fence separating Embakasi from the military’s Humanitarian Peace Support School (HPSS) when he found a metallic item in the trash. As he was inspecting the item, it exploded, injuring Onyango on his face, legs, and hands.

Onyango was rushed to a nearby hospital, where he is being treated for his injuries. The police are investigating the source of the grenade, but they believe it may have come from the HPSS. Bomb experts were called to the scene and picked up fragments from the explosive device for analysis.

In a separate incident, a bomb was found in a sewage drain in Mowlem area, Dandora. A local was cleaning the drain when he found a cylindrical metallic object resembling a bomb. The locals called police, who confirmed that the object was a bomb. The officer in charge of the bomb disposal unit, Paul Nyuto, confirmed that it was a 105mm anti-tank. The experts picked up the explosive for analysis and safe destruction as investigations go on.

It is not clear how the bomb arrived at the scene of either incident. The police are asking anyone with information about either incident to come forward.

Four Firearms Stolen from Police Station in Wajir County

Police in Griftu, Wajir County, are investigating the theft of four firearms from a local police station. The firearms, which include a G3 rifle, two AK-47 rifles, and an additional AK-47 rifle, were discovered missing from the station’s armory on July 7, 2023.

In addition to the firearms, 90 rounds of ammunition were also missing. The armory was not broken into, leading police to believe that the firearms were stolen by someone with access to the station.

The Officer Commanding Station (OCS) at Griftu Police Station has been arrested in connection with the theft. He is being held in police custody while the investigation continues.

The theft of the firearms comes at a time when the country is facing an upsurge in attacks by the militia group Al Shabaab. On July 6, 2023, ten police officers were injured in an ambush carried out by suspected Al Shabaab militants in Mandera County.

A month ago, four people were arrested in Garissa County for possessing deadly weapons. The four men were found in possession of an assortment of weapons, including AK-47 rifles, G3 rifles, and pistols.

The theft of the firearms from Griftu Police Station is a serious security concern. The weapons could be used by criminals or terrorists to carry out attacks. Police are urging anyone with information about the theft to come forward.

320K upkeep! Child support imeramba huyu Nairobi “Cirry Boy”

A Kenyan man who stopped paying monthly maintenance for his unborn child with his ex-girlfriend could face a one-month jail sentence if he fails to make all back payments within two weeks.

The man, identified as I.S., was ordered by the High Court to pay the woman, N.E.W., Sh80,000 per month in maintenance for the child. He had agreed to this amount in a consent judgment that was upheld by Justice Antony Mrima.

However, I.S. stopped making the payments in January 2022. He claimed that his business had been affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and that he could only afford to pay Sh40,000 per month.

The woman filed a contempt of court application against I.S., and the court has now ordered him to pay the arrears of Sh80,000 per month within 15 days. If he fails to do so, he will be sentenced to 30 days in civil detention.

The woman said that she needed the money to support her unborn child, as she was unemployed and had been experiencing mental upheaval during the pregnancy.

I.S. has not yet commented on the court’s decision.

Man “Smoking Drugs” Falls to His Death in Eastleigh

A 32-year-old man died after falling from the eighth floor of a hotel in Nairobi while trying to escape a smoking ban.

Adam Rashid had been staying in the room for two days with a friend when cleaners saw smoke coming from the room and went to investigate. They found the two men smoking an unknown substance believed to be drugs.

The cleaners informed the hotel manager, who told the men that smoking was not allowed in the hotel and that he would call the police. Smoking drugs on hotel property is also illegal.

The manager then locked the door to the room, trapping the two men inside. Rashid tried to escape through the window, but he stepped on a skylight roof, which fractured and caused him to fall to the second floor.

He was taken to Sakina Hospital, where he died from his injuries.

Police who responded to the scene found a white substance in the room that they believe to be cocaine. Rashid’s friend was questioned and released on bail pending further investigation.

The body was taken to the mortuary for an autopsy.

Mason Killed by Falling Stone at Construction Site

In a separate incident, a 38-year-old mason was killed when a stone fell on his head at a construction site in Nairobi’s Kahawa West neighborhood.

Zijenga Wycliffe Ochuo was among a group of masons working on the fifth floor of a building when a stone fell from above and hit him in the head. He was rushed to KU Teaching and Referral Hospital, where he died while undergoing treatment.

Police said they are investigating the incident.

Matatu driver arrested for obstructing the First Lady’s convoy

A bus driver was arrested on Wednesday, June 21, for obstructing the First Lady’s convoy along University Way in Nairobi.

The driver, who was ferrying passengers to Kakamega, was apprehended at approximately 6:30 am. He was later released on bail after being charged with obstruction.

The driver told the media that he was unaware that the convoy was approaching when he stopped to pick up passengers. He said that he waited for 15 minutes after the convoy passed before moving on.

However, the police said that the driver was arrested because he did not pull over to the side of the road when the convoy approached. They said that he was also driving too slowly, which caused a traffic jam.

The driver’s arrest has sparked outrage on social media, with many people criticizing the police for their heavy-handedness. Some people have also questioned the need for the First Lady to have a convoy that obstructs traffic.

The First Lady is one of the few government officials who enjoy the right of way and are entitled to police clearance on the road when they travel. However, some people argue that this privilege should not be abused and that drivers should not be arrested for minor infractions.

The driver’s case is still pending in court. It remains to be seen whether he will be convicted of obstruction. However, the incident has highlighted the need for clear guidelines on how to handle situations where government officials’ convoys obstruct traffic.
