Learning has been paralyzed at the University of Nairobi (UoN) after lecturers began a nationwide strike on Wednesday, September 17. The industrial action, which started at around 10 a.m., is in response to the government’s failure to implement long-awaited collective bargaining agreements.
Led by the University Academic Staff Union (UASU), the Kenya University Staff Union (KUSU), and the Kenya Union of Domestic, Hotels, Educational Institutions, Hospitals and Allied Workers (KUDHEIHA), the striking dons marched on campus, waving banners and blowing vuvuzelas in protest.
The strike follows an earlier warning issued on September 10, where the unions announced their intention to paralyze learning across all institutions of higher learning if the government failed to address their grievances.

While issuing the final strike notice on September 16, UASU Secretary General Constantine Wesonga accused the government of ignoring agreements reached with lecturers, which led to the nationwide walkout.
