“Unprocedural And Unfair!’-Sifuna Vows Court Battle Over Fresh ODM Ouster
Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna has drawn a battle line with the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), vowing to legally challenge his fresh ouster as the party’s Secretary General. Sifuna has slammed the National Executive Committee’s (NEC) decision as unprocedural, unfair, and a direct violation of the party’s constitution.
In a sharp statement released on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, Sifuna’s Linda Mwananchi faction noted that the NEC’s move mirrored a botched coup from earlier this year.
“Last evening, we were made aware of the decision by the ODM Party NEC purporting, for the second time, to remove the SG Edwin Sifuna from office. On the face of it, the decision bears similarities with the first one in February; unprocedural, unfair and contrary to the Party’s Constitution,” the faction stated.
“After consultation with our legal teams earlier this morning, it has been decided to, once again, test the propriety of the purported ouster in the courts because we are convinced it should suffer the same fate as the first one in February.”
The Party’s Stand: “Sifuna Ceases to Be SG”
The drama peaked on Monday evening when ODM officially axed Sifuna after the NEC adopted the heavy recommendations of the Internal Dispute Resolution Mechanism (IDRM) committee. According to the party, the committee was properly constituted under Article 51(3)(f) of the ODM constitution to hear structural complaints leveled against the vocal Senator.
“After going through the report and findings of the IDRM under Article 74(2) of the Party constitution, the NEC unanimously resolved to adopt the Committee’s recommendations and endorsed the removal from office of Senator Edwin Sifuna,” announced Acting SG Catherine Omanyo. “Effectively, Sifuna ceases to be the SG of the ODM party.”
ODM defended the swift move by citing recent rulings from the Political Parties Disputes Tribunal (PPDT), which gave the green light for the disciplinary process to resume after previous blockades were lifted. Sifuna had reportedly boycotted the IDRM committee sittings after his legal counsel, Senior Counsel Isaac Okero, raised red flags over structural bias. The committee ultimately proceeded and ruled in his absence.
Faction Postpones Rallies for Gen-Z Memorials
Amid the internal party warfare, the Linda Mwananchi faction announced it has pushed back its highly anticipated political rallies in Kisii and Keroka, shifting the dates from Friday, June 26, to Friday, July 3, 2026.
The group stated that the postponement is intended to allow its members to join the rest of the country in standing in solidarity with the victims of the historic 2024 Gen-Z anti-government protests and their families.
Faction Focus on National Safety:
-
Solidarity: Honoring young Kenyans who were killed or forcefully disappeared during past demonstrations.
-
Vigilance: Monitoring potential state-sponsored or police brutality against peaceful civilian mourners.
-
Legal Readiness: Anticipating and preparing for potential unlawful arrests during the national commemoration window.
The faction strongly urged the police service to exercise restraint and fulfill its constitutional mandate to protect all citizens participating in the peaceful memorial events.
