‘Wewe Goliathi!’ Kindiki Defends Ruto’s Claims Of Turning Kenya’s Into a First World Country

The government has hit back at critics questioning President William Ruto’s goal of transforming Kenya into a first-world nation similar to Singapore. On Thursday, December 18, 2025, Deputy President Kithure Kindiki dismissed “pessimistic” views, asserting that the country’s economic and infrastructural ambitions are achievable regardless of its geographical size.

The Deputy President’s remarks serve as a direct response to a viral critique by Citizen TV journalist Linus Kaikai. During a panel debate, Kaikai argued that comparing Kenya to Singapore is flawed because the latter is a tiny city-state—roughly 800 times smaller than Kenya—with a diameter comparable only to the distance between Nairobi and Thika. Kaikai suggested that the President’s frequent references to Singapore ignore the vast differences in scale, history, and the specific meritocratic “script” that fueled Singapore’s rise.

However, Kindiki countered that Kenya’s “first-world ambition” is not modeled solely on Singapore but draws inspiration from several developed Asian nations. He pointed to China as the ultimate proof that a country’s size—whether massive or small—is not an excuse for stagnation.

“China, a mega country of 1.5 billion people, is almost 17 times larger than Kenya,” Kindiki argued.

He noted that China successfully transitioned from a poor, isolated nation to a global economic powerhouse in just 40 years, starting with its turning point in 1978.

“If China could do it at that scale, size and history should not limit Kenya’s ambitions. Kenya will transition to the first world in our lifetime,” he added.

Reiterating the administration’s stance, the Deputy President emphasized that with long-term planning and the right policy framework, Kenya can reach high-income status. He maintained that the government remains focused on its development trajectory, viewing the success of Asian “Tigers” and giants alike as valid blueprints for Kenya’s future.
