Julius Malema walks free despite conviction for firearm offence

South African opposition leader Julius Malema has been granted temporary relief after a court allowed him to appeal his five-year prison sentence, a decision that lets him remain free as the legal process continues.

Court Grants Leave to Appeal

Malema, leader of the Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF), walked out of court on Thursday visibly relieved after Magistrate Twanet Olivier approved his application for leave to appeal.

The ruling means Malema will not begin serving his sentence immediately, instead remaining out of custody while the appeal is heard—a development that offers him a significant legal and political reprieve.

Background to the Case

The EFF leader had earlier been handed a five-year jail term following a landmark conviction related to the unlawful handling and discharge of a firearm. The case has drawn widespread attention, given Malema’s high-profile role in South African politics.

Relief Inside and Outside Court

The decision sparked an emotional response in the courtroom, with Malema reportedly waving goodbye to the magistrate as he exited. Outside, supporters who had gathered in anticipation of the ruling reacted with visible relief upon learning he would not be taken into custody.

What Happens Next

With the appeal now set to proceed, Malema’s legal battle is far from over. However, the court’s decision ensures that, for now, he retains both his freedom and the ability to continue his political activities.

The case is expected to remain closely watched, as its outcome could have significant implications for both Malema’s future and the broader political landscape in South Africa.

“There is no total independence in Kenya” South Africa’s firebrand politician Julius Malema declares

Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) leader Julias Malema has blasted Kenyan and Zimbabwean Judiciary for wearing wigs which he says is a representation of colonial system.

Speaking during a press conference, Malema lashed out at former British colonies for staying within the Commonwealth which he claims perpetuates white supremacy and white arrogance.

He called out Kenyan and Zimbabwean judiciary for continuing with ‘white practices’ years after attaining independence from their colonial masters.

“We still have judges in Kenya, in Zimbabwe wearing wigs… blonde wigs. What is that? What is that? And including some scholars who are lawyers they are still wearing those things and come and lecture us about decolonization wearing a wig,” said Malema.

Adding that;

“We must have a language that unites Africans, like Swahili. If Swahili can be developed and it becomes a continental language and then we do away with speaking to each other in English, because that’s what colonizers did…divided us, made sure we didn’t have a common language to communicate among ourselves and then we use their language to communicate so that they can hear everything that we say.”

Kenya is not totally independent

Malema also took shot at Kenya’s relationship with US, he claimed Kenya was not totally independent since America has a huge interest in the country.

“Kenya of course is a something different, I don’t think there is a total independence there… America has is got a huge interest in that arrangement of Kenya. But everywhere else in the continent we need to start doing away with those things.” said Malema.
