Hii Njaanuary itauma! Kenyans shocked as cabbage spikes in price

The festive season may be over, but for many Kenyans, January has arrived with a harsh financial reality. Beyond school fees and lingering holiday debts, households are now grappling with a sharp rise in the cost of basic food items.

According to a report by NTV Kenya, families in major trading centres such as Kakamega and Kisumu are feeling the pinch most acutely. Even cabbage — a staple on many Kenyan dinner tables — has become increasingly unaffordable for ordinary consumers.

A Sudden Shortage

At Masingo Market in Kakamega, the once-abundant displays of green vegetables have noticeably thinned. Traders say cabbage supplies began declining almost immediately after the Christmas and New Year celebrations, turning what was once a cheap and readily available vegetable into a scarce commodity.

“Before the festive season, cabbage was in plenty. But as soon as the celebrations began, we started experiencing shortages,” one trader explained.

Vendors attribute the shortage largely to the onset of the dry season, locally known as kiangazi. Reduced rainfall has affected local production, leaving markets dependent on limited supplies.

Prices Triple in a Matter of Weeks

The impact on prices has been dramatic. Before the festive period, a large head of cabbage sold for between KSh 40 and KSh 50. Today, the same cabbage is retailing for up to KSh 150 — a nearly threefold increase in just a few weeks.

This sharp rise has placed both households and small businesses under immense pressure. Vegetable vendors and small hotel operators in Kakamega and Kisumu say they are struggling to stay afloat as the cost of raw materials rises while customers’ purchasing power continues to shrink.

Businesses on the Brink

The hospitality sector has been hit particularly hard. Local eateries that depend on cabbage as a key accompaniment to ugali are finding it increasingly difficult to maintain profit margins.

Some traders warn that if prices remain high, they may be forced to sell cabbage in small, pre-cut portions to make it affordable for customers.

“We are getting to a point where cabbage will have to be sold in pieces,” one consumer said. “It’s hard to justify spending KSh 150 on cabbage when maize flour costs the same.”

There are also reports that some of the cabbages currently available in local markets are being imported from Uganda, a move that further drives up prices due to transport and middlemen costs.

Few Alternatives in Sight

For consumers hoping to switch to other vegetables, options are limited. Sukuma wiki (kale), a common substitute, is also becoming scarce and increasingly expensive. In some areas, supplies are now being transported from as far as Molo, hundreds of kilometres away.

With the dry season showing no immediate signs of easing, many Kenyans fear that the strain on household budgets may persist well into the new year.

Nairobi leads in new HIV infection rates

Kenya has reported a sharp rise in new HIV infections, recording a 19 percent increase from 16,752 cases in 2023 to 19,991 in 2024.

The figures are drawn from the World Aids Day 2025 report by the National Syndemic Disease Control Council (NSDCC), which monitors the country’s progress and setbacks in the fight against HIV.

The data places Kenya among the world’s HIV transmission hotspots, highlighting the need to intensify prevention and treatment efforts.

Nairobi Leads in New Infections

Nairobi County posted the highest number of new cases at 3,045. Counties in the western region followed closely, with Migori registering 1,572 infections, Kisumu 1,341, Homa Bay 1,180, and Busia 886.

Other counties with notable case numbers include Siaya, Kakamega, Nakuru, Mombasa, and Bungoma, reflecting long-standing regional trends. The disparities underscore the heavy burden borne by urban and lakeside counties.

Youth Account for Majority of New Cases

The report shows that young people aged 15–34 make up 74 percent of all new infections. Young women remain disproportionately affected, a trend experts link to social, economic, and biological factors that heighten their vulnerability.

Rising Prevalence and HIV-Related Deaths

Kenya’s national HIV prevalence stands at 3 percent—about 1.3 million people living with the virus. This number includes thousands of children affected through paediatric infections and mother-to-child transmission.

HIV-related deaths have also risen, climbing to 21,007 in 2024 from 18,473 in 2023, pointing to gaps in treatment, delayed diagnoses, and challenges with adherence.

Kenya Among Countries With Highest Global HIV Burden

Globally, Kenya ranks eighth among nations with the highest HIV burden. It appears on the list alongside South Africa, India, Mozambique, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia—countries that collectively account for a substantial share of global HIV cases.

Nairobi River Declared a Special Planning Area (SPA): What Does it Mean?

The government has designated the Nairobi River Valley as a Special Planning Area (SPA) – a major milestone in Kenya’s urban renewal journey.

This is aimed at reclaiming the health and dignity of the Nairobi River and its surrounding communities.

Under the banner Mito Safi, Maisha Poa (Clean Rivers, Better Lives), the Nairobi River Regeneration Project is reshaping how we plan for cities.

The SPA – gazetted on March 6, 2025 – covers a 60-metre corridor from Naivasha Road to Ruai.

It sets in motion a structured two-year process that will guide infrastructure upgrades, environmental restoration, and inclusive development across the river basin.

But what exactly is a Special Planning Area?

A SPA is not an eviction notice.

It is a legal planning tool that allows government and communities to co-create a shared future – one anchored in transparency, fairness, and inclusivity.

Through this designation, the government can fast-track urgent improvements while ensuring every voice is heard.

Here’s What to Expect from the SPA

The SPA process will involve:

  • Community forums and local engagement to gather input and align priorities.
  • Environmental and social assessments to inform responsible development.
  • Planning for dignified, affordable housing in informal settlements.
  • Green spaces and flood mitigation infrastructure to restore the river’s health.

Importance of Public Participation

Residents, stakeholders, and partners will have opportunities to participate in shaping the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) that emerges from this process.

The Nairobi River Commission has committed to multilingual messaging, public updates, and open channels for feedback to ensure full transparency.

The Future of Nairobi River

This is more than just a planning exercise – it’s a model for how cities across Africa can grow sustainably.

By putting people and the planet first, the Nairobi River SPA offers a new vision for urban transformation.

Together, we’re building a city where clean rivers mean better lives.

Climate WorX Nairobi: Greening the City, Empowering the Youth

In a city where rivers once teemed with life and green spaces thrived, Nairobi’s rapid urbanization has left behind a trail of pollution, clogged waterways, and deforested landscapes.

But, a new wave of environmental restoration is sweeping across the city.

Climate WorX Mtaani, an ambitious government-backed initiative, is not just cleaning up Nairobi but also providing green jobs to thousands of youth and women.

A Bold Initiative for Climate Resilience

Launched as part of a broader climate action agenda, Climate WorX Mtaani is a labor-intensive employment program targeting 200,000 Kenyan youth across all 47 counties.

At its core, the initiative merges economic recovery with climate resilience, tackling environmental degradation while creating sustainable livelihoods.

By engaging over 21,000 youths in Nairobi alone, the program is transforming riparian zones, rehabilitating rivers, and reintroducing green spaces to urban centres.

Under the supervision of the National Youth Service (NYS) and Kenya Defence Forces (KDF), these young environmentalists are on a mission to reclaim their city from years of neglect.

Cleaning Up Nairobi’s Rivers and Streets

The state of Nairobi’s rivers – Mathare, Ngong, and Nairobi – has long been a cause for concern.

Years of industrial waste dumping, encroachments, and poor waste management have turned these lifelines into toxic wastelands.

Climate WorX Mtaani is reversing this damage through:

  • Garbage collection (82 km covered so far)
  • Unclogging river channels (84 km restored)
  • Sorting and removing debris (46 km completed)
  • Bush clearing and leveling for landscaping (45 km done)
  • Unblocking sewer lines and drainage systems (66 km improved)

By addressing the root causes of pollution, the initiative is not only cleaning up the city but also preventing future contamination.

Tree Planting and Urban Greening

Beyond clean-ups, Climate WorX Mtaani is leading Nairobi’s reforestation efforts.

With over 538 tree nurseries established and nearly 500,000 seedlings potted, the program is reshaping Nairobi’s green landscape.

Communities around Ngong Forest and Mathare are now engaged in agroforestry, turning once-barren riparian lands into thriving ecological zones.

The initiative isn’t just about planting trees – it’s about stewardship.

Youth groups are being trained to nurture trees and integrate them into urban planning, ensuring that green spaces remain a permanent fixture in the city.

Beyond the Environment: A Lifeline for Youth and Women

At the heart of Climate WorX Mtaani is a powerful social impact: job creation.

In an economy where unemployment remains a pressing issue, especially among young people, the program offers:

  • Direct employment at Ksh500 per day for workers and Ksh550 for supervisors
  • Entrepreneurial pathways in green businesses, such as waste recycling and tree nursery management
  • Leadership development by empowering youth to spearhead community-led environmental projects

For many, this is more than a pay check – it’s a chance to reclaim dignity, contribute to society, and be part of a transformative movement.

Challenges: The Fight Against Re-Dumping and Pollution

Despite its successes, Climate WorX Mtaani faces major hurdles.

Persistent waste dumping in previously cleared areas, especially during the festive season, threatens to undo progress.

Additionally, uncontrolled sewage discharge, industrial encroachments along riparian zones, and inadequate waste disposal systems continue to strain efforts.

Heavy rains also exacerbate the problem, washing pollutants downstream and undoing months of clean up work.

Without stricter enforcement and community buy-in, maintaining the progress made so far remains a challenge.

The Way Forward: Sustaining the Green Revolution

To ensure the long-term success of Climate WorX Mtaani, several strategies are being prioritized:

  • Increased resources for sewer maintenance and waste collection.
  • Stronger community engagement in tree planting and conservation efforts.
  • Policy enforcement to prevent further encroachments along riparian areas.
  • Promotion of renewable energy to reduce dependency on fossil fuels.

A Model for Green Jobs and Climate Action

The Climate WorX Mtaani initiative is not just about cleaning Nairobi – it’s a blueprint for sustainable urban development.

By aligning with global green job trends, the program is equipping youth with skills in environmental restoration, waste management, and climate resilience.

As it expands, Climate WorX Mtaani holds the promise of transforming Nairobi into a cleaner, greener, and more livable city.

With continued commitment from government agencies, community stakeholders, and the youth on the frontlines, this initiative could set the stage for a new era of climate-conscious urban development.

Nairobi is rising again – one tree, one clean river, and one empowered youth at a time.

Nairobi County has seven days to dispose of 185 unclaimed dead.

Nairobi residents have been given a seven-day ultimatum to identify the bodies of their loved ones currently housed at the City Mortuary, Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital, and Mbagathi Hospital morgues.

Failure to claim these bodies within the stipulated timeframe will lead to Nairobi County disposing of all 185 unclaimed bodies. Specifically, City Mortuary holds 130 unclaimed bodies, Mbagathi Hospital Mortuary has 38, and Mama Lucy Hospital Mortuary has 17.

These unclaimed bodies have accumulated in the mortuaries between September 2021 and December 2023, originating from various police stations.

A public notice issued under the Public Health Act Cap 242 [Subsidiary: PUBLIC HEALTH (PUBLIC MORTUARIES) RULES, 1991 (2)] urges interested members of the public to identify and collect the bodies within seven days. Failure to do so will prompt Nairobi City County to seek authorization for disposal.

The announcement has sparked debate, especially since some of the bodies are suspected to be individuals who died by suicide. Concerns have been raised regarding whether the families of these individuals are aware of their demise.

Acting County Secretary and Head of County Public Service Patrick Analo highlighted various causes of death among the unclaimed bodies, including road accidents, murder, sudden deaths, natural causes, and mob justice.

According to the Public Health Act Cap 242 of 1991, an unclaimed body must be removed from a mortuary within fourteen days. Failure to claim it within this period may result in disposal in a mass grave, subject to obtaining court permission by the relevant public officer.

Unknown woman discovered dead in Nairobi with her hands bound

Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) are intensifying efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding the death of a woman discovered with her hands bound at City Park in Nairobi.

The victim, identified as Ms. Rosemary Shikuku, has been positively identified by detectives, who are now pursuing crucial leads, including a police abstract issued at Kamukunji Police Station.

“We are still pursuing leads that will assist us in understanding what might have happened. However, her native home has been known,” stated a DCI detective who spoke confidentially to a reporter.

The discovery of Ms. Shikuku’s body was made by a man taking a walk around the Parklands area. Initially, he thought the 35-year-old was napping in public with her belongings nearby. However, upon closer inspection, he noticed her hands were tied, and there were injuries on her head.

The man promptly informed the police, who arrived at the crime scene. During their search, clothes were found in a bag near the body.

Investigations suggest that the woman was not murdered at the scene, as there were no signs of a struggle or disturbance. Currently, detectives are working to determine the exact location where the crime occurred before the body was brought to the park.

Forensic experts are conducting examinations to check for fingerprints on Ms. Shikuku’s body. Her remains have been taken to the City Mortuary, awaiting a postmortem examination.

An elderly woman’s body was discovered abandoned in City Park

The lifeless body of a murdered woman, identified as Rosemary Shikoku, aged 35, was discovered dumped at City Park in Parklands, Nairobi.

According to the police, her hands were bound with a rope behind her back, and she had facial injuries. The body was found by a man who had entered the park, and he promptly informed the police.

Near the body, a bag suspected to be hers was found, containing an identification waiting card and a police abstract issued at Kamukunji police station. Assorted clothing was also discovered in the bag.

Authorities believe that the murder may have occurred elsewhere, as there were no signs of blood oozing from the inflicted injuries, and the crime scene was undisturbed, indicating that the murder did not take place there, said Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei.

Detectives are now investigating the incident to determine where the woman was killed. The body has been moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

The motive for the murder remains unknown, and no arrests have been made at this point.

In a separate incident, police are looking into the stabbing death of a garbage collector in an attack by a rival group in Nairobi’s Dandora area, which hosts the city’s dumping site. The victim, Alex Mwendwa, was stabbed and rushed to Mama Lucy hospital with multiple injuries on Monday, March 4, where he succumbed.

According to the police, Mwendwa was at his friend’s house within Baraka Mowlem when they were attacked by a group of garbage collectors involved in territory disputes. The victims raised an alarm, and one suspect was chased and caught by a mob, who beat him before the police intervened. The suspect is now hospitalized pending interrogation and further investigation into the murder. The police hope to apprehend more suspects as part of the ongoing murder probe, and a significant operation is planned at the dump site in connection with the case.

Githurai policeman with gun suspected of robbing

On February 14, 2024, a suspected robber was fatally shot in Githurai Area after engaging in a shootout with the police, resulting in his demise. Two accomplices managed to evade capture during the incident.

The police were alerted to the suspects’ activities, involving attacks on pedestrians and others, leading to the fatal encounter. The deceased robber was found in possession of a loaded pistol containing two bullets, which has been seized as evidence.

Forensic tests conducted by detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) aim to determine if the seized pistol has been involved in other criminal activities. The deceased’s body has been transported to the City Mortuary pending postmortem and identification.

A manhunt is currently underway for the two remaining suspects who fled the scene. Authorities encourage anyone with information to come forward.

Nairobi County police boss Adamson Bungei issued a stern warning to suspected criminals terrorizing the city, assuring that there are sufficient police officers deployed across Nairobi estates to address criminal elements.

This incident occurred just three days after another confrontation with suspected robbers, resulting in the death of two individuals in a failed robbery targeting a local supermarket along Raphta Road in Kilimani, Nairobi County. The apprehended suspects had a pistol loaded with six bullets and two knives. The police also recovered the motorcycle used by the suspects during the attempted robbery. The duo was spotted by vigilant supermarket attendants, prompting swift police action.

Two boys die in a swimming pool in Kilimani, a tragedy

Police are currently investigating a tragic incident in which two boys, aged 12 and 13, drowned at a swimming pool in Kilimani, Nairobi.

The incident occurred on a Sunday afternoon when the two boys were on a swimming expedition. Upon receiving a call, the police arrived at the scene to find the lifeless bodies of the two boys next to the pool. The bodies have been moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

It remains unclear whether a guide was present at the pool during the incident, and the police are actively looking into the matter. Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei described the incident as tragic and emphasized the importance of caution, advising swimming pool attendants to be vigilant, especially during busy weekends.

In another unfortunate incident in Kwale, at Kwa Ruwa water pan in Makamini “D” village, the bodies of two minors, aged six and four, were found floating after drowning. The brothers, who were tending to their animals, drowned in the water on February 10. Other villagers discovered the bodies hours later, and they were later released to the families for burial rites. The police are conducting an investigation into this tragedy.

After a rapper in Riruta falls from the fifth story and dies, four Nigerians are arrested

Detectives are currently detaining four Nigerian men in connection with the death of a 25-year-old man in the Riruta area of Nairobi.

The victim, identified as Charles Waga Otieno, reportedly jumped from the fifth floor of an apartment following an altercation with the four Nigerians. Waga, a promising rapper according to his friends, was delivering a carpet to the apartment where the four suspects resided.

Upon investigation, the police learned that Waga had gone to deliver the carpet to a seventh-floor room rented by a Nigerian who paid him Sh400 for the work. However, an altercation ensued, leading to Waga screaming, stripping naked, and eventually jumping from the fifth floor, sustaining severe head injuries.

He was rushed to Coptic Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival. The four foreigners were arrested pending investigations into the incident, which is being treated as a potential murder.

The motive behind Waga’s decision to jump to his death while naked remains unclear. His body has been moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy.

In a separate case, police are also investigating the death of Stephen Maina, a driving school instructor in Lari Constituency, Kiambu County. His body was found dumped next to a funeral home in Lari. The circumstances surrounding Maina’s death are under investigation.

This incident comes after the discovery of another body, that of a middle-aged woman, dumped in Kinale Forest on Monday. She had reportedly been raped before being killed. Detectives are actively investigating these cases as incidents of homicide continue to rise in the area.

After being wounded by assailants, a Nairobi lawyer is in critical condition

A High Court advocate is currently battling for his life in the hospital after being attacked and shot by gunmen on his way back to the city on the morning of Sunday, January 28.

Anthony Gathitu Kabathi, a lawyer affiliated with the Kabuthi and Company Advocates law firm in Nairobi, was returning to Nairobi from a client meeting in Garissa when the ambush occurred along the Isiolo-Modogashe Road.

The incident took place near Laga Logo, about five kilometers from a police camp, known for being an area frequented by marauding bandits.

Upon receiving a distress call from the public, the police responded to find a man bleeding in a Toyota Land Cruiser V8 that had veered off the road and stalled in a bush.

The lawyer suffered severe gunshot wounds to his chest, left hand, thumb, and left side of his abdomen during the ambush.

Responding General Service Unit officers discovered the victim’s car doors and boot open, and the driver injured. It is believed that he was also robbed of an undisclosed amount of money and other valuables.

The officers, equipped with a Mine-Resistant Ambush Protected (MRAP) vehicle, conducted a search in the area, administered first aid to the lawyer, and then transported him to Isiolo Galaxy Hospital. Plans were underway to airlift him to Nairobi.

In August 2023, bandits killed six people on the outskirts of Garissa town, including a taxi driver and five passengers, two of whom were students. The victims were en route to the border town of Holugho when the bandits launched the attack.

Rising Fear Among Women: Murders and Ritual Rumors Spark Safety Concerns

A wave of violence against women in Kenya has sparked fear and introspection across the nation. Recent murders, particularly the brutal killing of Starlet Wahu and the Roysambu case, have reignited concerns about safety, especially when meeting new people online or dating.

The hashtag #StopKillingWomen dominates social media, but questions remain: how can women ensure their security in relationships and while navigating the dating world? Facebook discussions reveal a pervasive fear, exacerbated by videos circulating online about ritualistic killings.

Wahu’s death, which occurred while meeting someone from a dating site, serves as a stark reminder of the potential dangers. The subsequent arrest of John Matara only underscores the reality of violence within relationships. Days later, the Roysambu incident, with its suspected ritualistic connection, added another layer of fear and speculation.

This climate has pushed some women to consider drastic measures. Comments like “I’m swearing off men” and “Sahii kama date haiko police station sitaki” (Rather than a date, I prefer the police station) reflect the desperation and emotional toll these events have taken.

The situation demands action. While #StopKillingWomen raises awareness, immediate steps are needed to prioritize women’s safety. Improved online safety measures, stricter background checks, and readily accessible resources for vulnerable individuals are crucial steps. Open conversations about violence against women, both online and offline, can also dismantle harmful stereotypes and empower women to seek help.

This rising fear cannot be ignored. It’s a plea for action, a cry for a society where women can interact with the world and each other without fear of violence. By addressing the root causes, strengthening protective measures, and facilitating open dialogue, we can build a safer future for all.

Gruesome Murder in Roysambu: Key Suspect Apprehended, Details Emerge

Nairobi, Kenya: In a swift operation, Kenyan police have apprehended at least three individuals linked to the brutal murder of a 20-year-old woman in TRM Drive, Roysambu. The main suspect, believed to be a Nigerian national, was nabbed at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Monday evening as he attempted to flee to Abuja. Two accomplices are currently in custody at Kasarani police station.

Authorities remain tight-lipped about the victim’s identity due to the ongoing investigation. However, chilling details of the crime have emerged. The suspect reportedly employed a hacksaw to dismember the woman’s body, severing limbs and separating the head from the torso. He then wrapped the remains in a bedsheet and paper bag, leaving gruesome marks on the body.

Investigators suspect the act was a contract killing, with the dismembered body serving as grim proof of completion for the man’s “masters.” CCTV footage and phone data placed the suspect in the Ruaka area of Kiambu County, prompting police to request surveillance footage from local buildings. This evidence aims to corroborate his identity, captured earlier outside the murder scene.

While the motive remains unclear, police confirmed the body’s dismemberment. The victim’s family, who visited City Mortuary to identify her, were advised to await further analysis before any information regarding her identity is released.

This heinous crime highlights the need for heightened vigilance and strengthened security measures. As the investigation unfolds, Kenyans await further updates, hoping for swift justice for the victim and her family.

The woman’s family identifies her at the morgue, but key body parts missing delay release of her name. Police suspect the man, likely hired, used a hacksaw and hid his identity with a cap and glasses.

He booked the room with fake documents and cash, dismembered the body in the rented apartment, and ditched the remains in the trash.

Investigators fear he may strike again and urge the public to help identify him.

Key Points:

  • The victim’s identity remains undisclosed due to missing body parts and ongoing investigations.
  • Police believe the suspect, captured on CCTV, used a hacksaw to dismember the body and dispose of it in the trash.
  • CCTV footage shows the suspect booking the room under a fake name and posing with a black bag, potentially containing the murder weapon.

Grim Discovery on Thika Road: Unidentified Woman Slain, Hunt for Suspect On

A horrific discovery has shaken Nairobi, as the mutilated remains of a young woman were found near Thika Road. Detectives are urgently seeking the suspect in this brutal murder, piecing together clues amidst a shroud of unanswered questions.

The victim, estimated to be around 24 years old, remains unidentified. Police are relying on fingerprint analysis and public assistance to establish her identity and trace her family.

Preliminary investigations revealed the woman was brutally stabbed and dismembered within a rented apartment along TRM Drive. CCTV footage captured a man, presumed to be the perpetrator, booking the room just the day before. He arrived with the woman on Saturday and checked out alone on Sunday morning, raising suspicion from the hotel staff.

“He seemed to have acted in rage, and we fear he might harm others,” confided an officer involved in the case. This chilling possibility underlines the urgency of the manhunt.

The suspect’s identity remains unknown. CCTV footage offers a glimpse: a man clad in black jeans, a black jumper, and a navy blue shirt, sporting glasses and a white cap. While these details provide a starting point, the investigation necessitates broader public cooperation.

“We are looking for the suspect behind the murder,” confirmed Nairobi police boss Adamson Bungei. He urged caution for landlords and hotel owners, emphasizing the need for stricter background checks on customers.

Authorities urge anyone with information concerning the victim or the suspect to come forward. Any detail, however seemingly insignificant, could prove crucial in solving this shocking crime and ensuring justice for the victim.

New Year’s Day Shooting in Nairobi Leaves U.S.-Based Professor Injured

A Kenyan-born American professor visiting Nairobi on vacation was shot and injured by a police officer early Monday morning in Ngara, Nairobi, following a traffic incident.

According to authorities, the professor was among motorists driving on the wrong side of the road near the Globe Roundabout-Slip Road junction. Officers on patrol attempted to control the post-New Year’s Day traffic flow and approached the professor’s vehicle to inquire about the driving violation.

The police report claims that the professor then exited his car and allegedly attacked one of the officers. A struggle ensued, resulting in the officer discharging his AK-47 rifle, accidentally hitting the professor in both thighs. The professor then fled in his vehicle towards University Way.

Preliminary investigations suggest the shooting was accidental. The professor, currently in stable condition at the Nairobi Hospital, will be interviewed by detectives to provide his account of the incident.

Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei confirmed the ongoing investigation and emphasized the importance of gathering all sides of the story before reaching conclusions. “He has his side of the story which will set things in motion,” another officer involved in the case stated.

The top 10 estates that have experienced a drop in rental properties

While Nairobi’s real estate landscape continues to expand, 2023 witnessed an intriguing trend: rent drops in both premium and satellite town neighborhoods. Several factors, including a growing supply of rental units, changing lifestyle preferences, and economic uncertainty, contributed to this shift.

Posh Places Facing Pressure:

  • Kileleshwa: Once a coveted address, it saw a mass exodus due to the proliferation of high-rise apartments, pushing rents down. Similar declines were observed in Karen, Donholm, Parklands, Kilimani, Kitisuru, Lavington, and Muthaiga.

Satellite Town Blues:

  • Juja, Tigoni, Kiambu, Kiserian, Limuru, Athi River, Ruiru, Mlolongo, and Thika also experienced downward pressure due to oversupply exceeding demand. This highlights the potential risks of rapid development outpacing resident needs.

Bright Spots Remain:

  • Certain areas defied the trend: Ngong Town saw a 17.6% rise in house rents, while Ongata Rongai apartments skyrocketed by 22% between April and June. Limuru, with its ongoing infrastructure upgrades, also attracted renters seeking a quieter alternative.

Insights and Implications:

  • This dynamic market underscores the influence of economic anxieties and evolving preferences on housing choices.

  • Developers building in satellite towns need to carefully consider demand and infrastructure development to avoid oversupply and price drops.

  • Landlords in select areas may need to adjust their pricing strategies to stay competitive.

  • The rise of certain towns like Ngong and Ongata Rongai indicates potential avenues for future urban expansion.

The Nairobi rental market’s 2023 performance throws light on the intricate interplay between economic climate, infrastructure, and individual preferences. Navigating this shifting landscape requires flexibility, responsiveness, and a keen understanding of evolving trends.

Dandora: Parents Detained After Daughter’s Death Under Investigation

A couple in Dandora Sub-County are being detained while authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding their six-year-old daughter’s death. The girl passed away on Jamhuri Day, and her parents initially reported it as a result of chest complications.

Discrepancies Raise Questions:

Police officers and DCI detectives responding to the report noted the presence of marks on the child’s neck and back, prompting suspicion of foul play. Additionally, a plastic wire found at the scene further fueled concerns.

Ongoing Investigation:

“We are investigating a potential case of murder, but the motive remains unclear,” stated DCI spokesperson Adamson Bungei. The scene has been processed, and the body transferred to the City Morgue for an autopsy.

Detainment and Next Steps:

The parents remain detained while detectives gather information and await the postmortem results. They maintain their initial statement about the cause of death, but DCI investigators are interviewing neighbors to piece together a timeline of events.

Focus on Objectivity and Sensitivity:

This rewrite avoids sensational language and focuses on factual information without speculating on motives or guilt. It emphasizes the ongoing investigation and the need for thorough examination before drawing conclusions. Additionally, it avoids using terms like “nabbed” or “murdered” in favor of neutral language like “detained” and “potential case of murder.”

Police officer commits suicide at DCI headquarters

A junior police officer committed suicide on Wednesday at the Directorate of Criminal Investigations headquarters in Nairobi by shooting himself in the head.

His coworkers claimed that he shot himself in the head with a gun in the parking lot after locking himself inside his car. He passed away instantly.

It was not immediately clear why the police officer took such drastic measures. When his coworkers checked after hearing a shot from the parking lot at the operations division, they discovered he had died.

He was shot in the head. In preparation for an autopsy, his body was taken to the mortuary.

Senior personnel were present in the office at the time of the occurrence. The event caused a panic.

This incident is the latest in a series of suicides by police officers in Kenya. Last week, a senior officer committed suicide in the Utawala neighborhood of Nairobi.

Police authorities have started offering counseling services as part of measures to stop the trend, and the National Police Service Commission has set up and staffed a unit to handle their demanding circumstances.

The counseling section will, among other things, assess, plan, and direct an outreach program that aids in the prevention of mental illness and drug abuse.

Every month, there are at least three examples of police personnel who commit suicide.

According to officials, cops are typically the ones that deal with concerns in the neighborhood. In addition to risking their lives, they are expected to preserve law and order in extremely challenging circumstances.

Trauma has been connected to an increase in service-related mortality throughout the years.

Why are police officers committing suicide?

There are a number of factors that may contribute to police suicide, including:

  • Workplace stress: Police officers often have to deal with high levels of stress on a daily basis. They may be exposed to violence, trauma, and death. They may also have to work long hours and deal with difficult people.
  • Mental health issues: Police officers may be more likely to experience mental health issues, such as depression and anxiety, due to the nature of their work.
  • Lack of support: Police officers may not have access to the support they need to cope with the stress of their job. This may include support from their colleagues, supervisors, and families.

Kenyan Mchawi sentenced for beheading girlfriend for ritual

Wechuli, a traditional healer who resided in Kawangware, Nairobi, left for home with Jane Kadogo Mutiso, his longtime partner of four months. Wechuli, who shared a home with his two children, called his daughter and requested her to fetch him a knife sometime after they had gone to bed.

The neighbor’s daughter overheard the healer asking someone to get on their knees and plead for forgiveness a little while afterwards. The daughter glanced through a gap in the door, enthralled by what she saw. The two were naked, and the male was urging the woman to close her eyes. He had a knife in his hand at the moment.

The youngster hurried over to her mother right away and told her what they had seen when they saw the man with his two kids and without the spouse.

In reaction to this, a mother and daughter went back to peek, and when they used a torch they found a leg. They called the watchman, who then got in touch with the landlord’s son, who dialed the watchman to unlock Wechuli’s house.

They were shocked to find a woman’s naked, decapitated body inside. Kadogo’s intestines were visible due to a cut in her stomach. There was a knife found nearby the body.
The witnesses went to the Muthangari police station and reported what they had seen after seeing this.

After being placed in a basket, Kadogo’s head was discovered by the police when they arrived. Additional ceremonial materials including a feather, twigs, and sorghum sticks were kept in a calabash. The victim was placed next to the bleeding knife. The cause of death was determined by an autopsy to be blunt force trauma lesions in the neck and abdomen. The DNA investigation revealed that the body and head belonged to Kadogo.

Later, Wechuli appeared at the police station and was held there. After being transported to the Kabete Police Station, he was sent to the Mathari Hospital for a mental health assessment.

The doctor concluded that the man’s mental state was normal, and the trial began with the prosecution calling 11 witnesses. Wechuli said, when challenged, that he had no wish to kill his partner.

Despite his protestations that he felt lightheaded and weary throughout that time, Kadogo insisted that they keep making love. The woman’s voice sounded like an epileptic when he rested on her chest in response to her pain.

According to information provided to the High Court, Wechuli saw a sizable hand coming toward him and used a big knife he was holding to chop it. Before the head appeared, he saw a vision of a body without a head. Then he perceived himself in a wilderness with an iron sheet shanty and a light.

Wechuli asserted that he saw the man take a head in his hand, chuck it, gather his kids, and lead them to their mother’s house in Kibera. On the way to the bus terminal, he said that he had a stomach ache and could smell alcohol.

Wechuli saw a crowd as he got home after dropping his kids off and a woman screaming, “The grandfather has killed someone.” Wechuli continued by stating that traditional medicine was utilized to treat and cure him for mental health concerns he had in 1986.

“According to him, if he was in his right mind, he would not have murdered the deceased. He pleaded that he had no intention of committing the offence,”

The trial court came to the conclusion that, taken as a whole, the evidence indicated that the defendant knew exactly what he was doing and that his intent to cause death was very evident.
He had not also demonstrated his insanity.

On March 8, the court handed down the death penalty after finding him guilty. In a petition to the Court of Appeal, Wechuli argued that the trial judge had violated the law by failing to consider his mental state at the time of the offense.

After reviewing the case, the court learned that the prosecution’s request for Wechuli to undergo a second exam was granted. When he was 12 years old, the boy overheard his father say that his son had a mental illness.

Drunkard in court for groping police woman at busaa den during raid

A 32-year-old guy has been accused of engaging in an indecent act with an adult after it was reported that he fondled a female police officer’s breast during a raid at an illegal drinking establishment in Makongeni, Nairobi.

According to section 11(a) of the Sexual Offenses Act of 2006, Erick Kibagendi is accused of purposefully caressing the police officer’s breast without getting her permission.

The accused person is also accused of beating up police constable Rodgers Wandera, who was on duty at the time, in violation of section 103(a) of the National Police Service (NPS) Act of 2011.

A second allegation of resisting an arrest by a police officer in violation of the NPS Act is also brought against Mr. Kibangendi.

When the public informed PC Wandera and his two female colleagues that there was a residence where partygoers were consuming busaa, a popular traditional brew, they were on patrol in the area.

When the officers arrived at the premises, they discovered drunks, among them Mr. Kibangendi. While his two female coworkers stood guard at the front door, the male officer entered the residence to search it.

After being questioned about why he had indecently assaulted the woman, Mr. Kibangendi is said to have gone to the door that the female police officers were guarding and touched one of them on her breast and threatened them.

He is alleged to have warned the officers that they would not be going anywhere and dared them to do what they could.

He allegedly resisted the three officers’ attempts to restrain him and struck PC Wandera with a blunt weapon, wounding him.
He was ultimately subdued and taken into custody by the officers before being held at Makongeni Police Station.

Before Senior Principal Magistrate Hellen Okwani of the Makadara Law Courts, the accused refuted the accusations. He testified before the court that he has no memory of the incident because he was intoxicated at the time.

The accused further asserted that the police officers hurt him and that he lost Sh6,500 during the arrest.

Construction worker dies, 4 injured in slab collapse at Parklands site

Police in Parklands are investigating the death of a construction worker who was killed when a slab collapsed on him at a site along Githuri Road.

The deceased, identified as Samson Muhanji, was working on the 18th floor of the building when the slab gave way. Four other workers were injured in the incident.

One of the injured workers said that they were not being provided with protective gear, making their jobs very dangerous. “We also fear raising the concerns because they will kick you out,” said the worker, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

The National Construction Authority (NCA) and the county government are investigating the matter.

This is the latest in a series of fatal accidents at construction sites in Nairobi. In recent months, there have been several cases of workers falling from heights or being crushed by falling objects.

In one case, a worker died after falling from the 12th floor of a building in Westlands. In another case, a worker was killed when a wall collapsed on him in Eastleigh.

The NCA has called for stricter safety measures at construction sites. The authority has also urged workers to speak up if they see safety violations.

In a separate incident, a five-year-old boy drowned in a water borehole at a construction site in Mwiki.

The boy, who has not been identified, was playing with other children in the area when he fell into the hole. His body was recovered a short time later.

The owner of the construction site is being questioned by the police over the incident.

These two incidents highlight the need for safety at construction sites. Workers and their employers must take all necessary precautions to prevent accidents.

Kenyans have been captivated by the story of Teresia Wanjiru and Mathe wa Ngara, following a recent drug bust.

The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) Kenya announced that a woman suspected to be behind drug deals in Ngara had been arrested.

Mathe wa Ngara, the alleged popular bhang seller in Ngara, was arrested in a police operation in Nairobi yesterday.

Mathe, who is said to operate around Kariya B in Nairobi County, disappeared when Teresia Wanjiru was arrested on Tuesday, August 15.

The DCI said in a tweet that they arrested Teresia alongside three minors after the Anti-Narcotics Unit and the Transnational Organized Crime Unit raided her place in the slums of Karuia within Ngara.

Teresia spoke to NTV on Sunday, August 20, describing the events leading to her arrest. She said that she was in her small hotel, as she calls it, when the police raided her place. She said that she was not aware of any drugs being sold in her hotel and that she was innocent of the charges against her.

The police have not yet released any information about Mathe wa Ngara’s arrest. However, the arrest of Teresia Wanjiru and the alleged drug bust in Ngara have sparked a lot of speculation and discussion in Kenya. Many people are wondering who Mathe wa Ngara is and what role she played in the drug trade.

The case is still under investigation and it is not yet clear what charges will be filed against Teresia Wanjiru or Mathe wa Ngara. However, the arrest of these two women has sent a strong message that the police are committed to cracking down on drug trafficking in Kenya.
