Paul Kagame Set for Victory in 4th Term as Rwanda’s President

Paul Kagame is poised for a landslide victory in Rwanda’s election, having secured 99.15 percent of the votes in partial results released by the National Electoral Commission.

The Commission reported that Kagame has garnered 7,099,810 votes, representing 99.15 percent of the total votes tallied so far. His closest challenger, Habineza Frank, has received 38,301 votes (0.53 percent), while Mfayimana Philippe has 22,753 votes (0.32 percent).

Vote tallying is still ongoing, according to the Commission.

Kagame, who has been in power for 24 years, was expected to win by a significant margin. He has dominated every election since becoming president in 2000, consistently receiving over 90% of the vote. In 2017, he won with an impressive 99%.

At 66, Kagame faced only two contenders authorized to run, as other candidates were barred by the state-run electoral commission.

Kagame has been a central figure in Rwandan politics since his rebel forces ended the 1994 genocide, which resulted in the deaths of approximately 800,000 ethnic Tutsis and moderate Hutus. He has since been praised for overseeing Rwanda’s dramatic revival and unifying the country.

Controversial Kenyan rapper blocked by Rwandan President Paul Kagame and his daughter Ange Kagame

Rwandan President Paul Kagame has blocked controversial Kenyan rapper who is one of his most vocal critics on social media.

Mwafreeka Mwaf is openly opposed to Paul Kagame’s regime, the Rwandan president has been in power since April 2000 and critics have labelled him a dictator.

Kagame was not supposed to run for president in 2017 but a constitutional amendment in 2015 lifted presidential term limits (initially Rwandan presidents were supposed to serve for two-terms of 7 years each) to ensure Kagame remains in office until 2034.

Mwafreeka Mwaf has been giving the Rwandan president sleepless nights with his tweets, he has blasted Kagame countless times over what he claims as his regime’s intolerance to pro-democracy movements.

The Rwandan president and his pretty daughter Ange Kagame have since retaliated by blocking the controversial Kenyan rapper on Twitter.

“Like father like daughter. Anyway I insist I hate dictators and I don’t care who loves them. People dreaming that a dictatorship would work in Kenya must know some of us would resist. We actually value our individual freedom of expression more than “tribe pride”” wrote Mwafreeka Mwaf after Kagame and his daughter blocked him on Twitter.
