Former public protector Thuli Madonsela to host launch of Human Rights Festival

Thuli Madonsela is expected to host the launch of an inaugural festival, today. The festival is to commemorate Human Rights Day.

The festival will run from the 23rd to the 25th of March. It will be presented by Constitution Hill in partnership with the human rights and social justice fraternity.

Madonsela and her foundation will thus launch it to the media today.

Human Rights Festival

“The Human Rights Festival is a symbolic commemoration of Human Rights Day. It pays homage to all those who lost their lives in the fight for democracy. This is particularly during the Sharpeville Massacre of 21 March 1960. Police opened fire on a group of peaceful protesters marching against the apartheid pass laws,” Constitution Hill’s Jeanny Morulane said.

The festival therefore, incorporates a robust programme involving social justice and human rights activists across all spectrums of society. This is according to Morulane.

“The key aim of the festival is to enhance participatory democracy. This is through public policy dialogue, civil society networking and strengthening the capacity of civil society organisations.”
