DP Kindiki Assures Nation Of Food Security Measures Amid Expected Elnino Rains

Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has assured the nation that the government is rolling out strategic interventions to mitigate the effects of depressed rainfall on agricultural production across the country’s key food baskets.

Speaking on Friday morning following a high-level meeting with relevant Cabinet Secretaries and Principal Secretaries at his official residence in Karen, Nairobi, Prof. Kindiki stated that the executive is working to prevent food shortages and protect farmers from weather-induced losses.

“I assure the country that the government is seized of the matter of what has happened this season and what is projected to happen later this year,” DP Kindiki said. “We are taking all possible measures to prevent any part of Kenya or any citizen from suffering from lack of food, famine, and to support farmers to make sure they don’t get disrupted because of the unfavourable weather.”

Key Government Interventions

To cushion agricultural producers and maintain national food security, the government has outlined several immediate and medium-term steps:

• Repurposing Affected Crops: For regions where maize crops failed due to poor rainfall, the government is introducing modalities to help farmers convert the stunted crops into animal feed, allowing them to recoup financial losses.

• Mitigating Post-Harvest Losses: With heavy rains forecasted for the October–December season, the administration will assist farmers in harvesting, drying, and safely storing mature crops before the onset of downpours.

• El Niño Preparation: The inter-ministerial team will meet weekly to coordinate the timely distribution of farm inputs and land preparation ahead of the late-2026 rainy season.

“We met this morning to look at some of the immediate interventions we need to make. We have agreed to continue meeting every week to make sure there is enough preparedness for any eventuality,” Prof. Kindiki added.
