Winnie Odinga Opens Up About Trauma Of Losing Her Father, Raila Odinga

Winnie Odinga has delivered a raw, deeply emotional account of the immense grief and political turmoil she has navigated since the tragic passing of her father, the late Kenyan political icon Raila Odinga, in India on October 15, 2025.

Speaking candidly during the Ignite 2026 summit, the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) MP opened up about the suddenness of her father’s demise and the suffocating pressure that followed.

The Shock and Trauma in India

For Winnie, who shared an exceptionally close bond with her father, the loss was an abrupt, reality-shattering event. She recalled how the rapid succession of events left her with absolutely no time to process her own heartbreak.

“In eight months, I have gone through the most difficult period of my life. My dad and I were tight. In fact, I tell people I am currently going through my midlife crisis,” Winnie confessed.

“A very traumatic event happened to me when I was in India. I was quickly rushed home. All of a sudden, I was told to speak about the person I had dedicated my whole life to. Nobody thought or knew, really, in that moment, the things I was thinking were, ‘Wait, I was just with him, I was talking to him, I was laughing with him, I was hugging him… and then all of a sudden, he went.’ And immediately after that, I am told: ‘Do this and do it properly.'”

Witnessing the “Destruction” of Her Father’s Legacy

Beyond the personal grief of losing a parent, Winnie expressed deep frustration and pain over how her father’s political legacy was handled immediately after his death. She took a sharp aim at individuals Raila Odinga had trusted, accusing them of dismantling everything he spent his lifetime building.

When she chose to speak out against the political shifts, however, she faced severe backlash from the public and political circles alike.

“Before I could look up, I saw the destruction of what he had built and what he had loved so dearly by those he had entrusted. And I felt so much pain,” she added. “When I spoke up, they said I was disrespectful. In my opinion, I was very respectful. I can bring back that Philadelphia real quick if they wanna see disrespectful! I was on the headlines, I trended, but I spoke because I knew what I was saying was correct. I was right. But then the debate disintegrated into the manner in which I said what I said.”

Stepping Back from the Spotlight

The intense scrutiny and the distortion of her message ultimately prompted the young politician to retreat from the public eye.

Winnie revealed that she made a conscious choice to step back and keep a low profile, preferring to silently watch events unfold rather than constantly battling the headlines. In a surprising admission for someone born into one of Africa’s most prominent political families, she also confessed that despite spending her entire life in the spotlight, she still harbors a deep-seated fear of public speaking.
