Abel Mutua Narrates Near Death Experience In Terrifying Late Night Experience

Kenyan actor, filmmaker, and popular storyteller Abel Mutua, better known as “Mkurugenzi,” has revealed he was attacked and robbed by armed thugs in a terrifying late-night incident in Kahawa West, Nairobi.

The assailants, who were wielding large knives, stole his iPhone 16 Pro Max and Bose headphones. Despite the threat of violence, Mutua was left unharmed, an outcome he publicly expressed gratitude for.

A Chilling Encounter Near the Morgue

Mutua shared the harrowing details of the ordeal on his Instagram, recounting how the attack occurred near the Kenyatta University Teaching, Referral and Research Hospital (KUTRRH) morgue. He highlighted the grim irony of the location—a fact that brought the potential severity of the attack into sharp focus.

“The young men at Kahawa West walinikaribisha jiji [welcomed me to the city] yesterday,” Abel wrote. “iPhone 16 Pro Max gone, Bose headphones gone as well. But cha muhimu ni [what’s important is] despite the massive knives they were carrying walinibakishia uhai [they spared my life].”

Reflecting on the location, he added:

“Ironically, they jumped me across from the KUTRRH morgue. Wangeamua, ningeamkia kwa fridge leo. Wabarikiwe for sparing a life.”

Unfazed by Security

Abel also noted the attackers’ boldness, pointing out the proximity of the area to major security installations, including the Kahawa Police Station, law courts, and Kamiti Prison.

“Yenyewe vijana hawatambui [Truly, these young people have no respect],” he lamented. “From this place — Kahawa Police Station, law courts, and Kamiti — are literally walking distance.”

Despite the traumatic experience, Mutua maintained his characteristic resilience and sense of humor. He even sent a playful warning to the new “owners” of his phone about a crucial folder containing his future scripts.

“My new phone owners, mkiona hiyo folder iko kwa notes imeandikwa [if you see that folder in the notes written] stories for 2025/26, kuna story ya Gaddafi hapo imeitishwa na wakurugenzi sana [there is a story about Gaddafi that is highly requested by the directors],” he joked.

Relief and Calls for Safety

Fans and fellow celebrities flooded social media with messages of support, expressing relief over Abel’s safety. The incident also sparked renewed concern over the rising trend of muggings and violent robberies across Nairobi.

Ultimately, Abel Mutua is thankful for his life and is using his platform to raise awareness about city safety, concluding with a message of perspective:

“They took my phone, but I thank God they didn’t take my life.”
