A Silent Tribute at the Gravesite

Final Rites and Cultural Significance

Raila Odinga was laid to rest on Sunday, October 19, 2025, in a private ceremony attended by national leaders, family, and close allies.

In observance of Luo cultural customs, Raila was buried with two of his most iconic items:

  • His trademark hat, known as Ogudu.
  • A ceremonial whisk, referred to as Orengo.

In Luo tradition, these items symbolize leadership, wisdom, and dignity. The whisk, often carried by revered elders, signifies authority and continuity, representing the enduring influence of the leader in the spiritual realm.

During the final rites, the Kenyan military also presented the national flag to Mama Ida, recognizing Raila’s lifetime of dedicated service and sacrifice to the nation.

Raila Odinga passed away on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at the age of 80. His death was caused by sudden cardiac failure while he was receiving treatment at the Sreedhareeyam Ayurvedic Eye Hospital and Research Centre in Koothattukulam, Kerala, during his morning walk.
