‘I Was Making Ksh 1 Million Per Day From 310 Scam’ – Pastor Kanyari

Controversial preacher Victor Mwangi Kanyari has opened up about the notorious “KSh 310” scandal that fundamentally altered the course of his life and ministry over a decade ago.

In a candid interview, Kanyari revisited the 2014 exposé by then-investigative journalist (and now Member of Parliament) Mohammed Ali, alias Jicho Pevu. The exposé revealed a calculated scheme where Kanyari, a Form Two dropout, urged his television audience to send exactly KSh 310 to a mobile money number in exchange for “miracle healings.”

The Magnitude of the Miracle Business

The preacher revealed the staggering financial success of the operation, claiming that at its peak, he was receiving approximately KSh 1 million daily from hopeful Kenyans.

“I used to get KSh 1 million per day. So imagine getting that for 30 days, that’s a clean KSh 30 million,” Kanyari stated. “I asked for KSh 310 for four years, so you can do the math of KSh 1 million a day for four years. Even if you eat the money, you can’t finish it.”

Kanyari argued that because the individual amount requested (KSh 310) was relatively small, people were willing to send it without much hesitation or anger. He likened the contributions to a simple gesture of buying him “tea and mandazi,” but noted that the sheer volume of contributors created a massive fortune.

Aftermath of the Exposé

The Jicho Pevu investigation rocked the nation, showing how Kanyari allegedly staged miracles to lure followers into the scheme. The subsequent public backlash was intense and had significant personal consequences, including his highly publicized separation from the late gospel star Betty Bayo.

Despite the scandal, Kanyari remains unrepentant about the financial structure of his ministry. He suggested that people should not be upset even now if he asks for small amounts like KSh 30, emphasizing that while the individual amounts are small, the collective impact remains significant for his operations.
