Digital creator and producer Judy Nyawira has opened up about her long-standing internal conflict with the title “Bi Mkurugenzi,” a name the public bestowed upon her due to her husband’s fame. Speaking on the Beyond The Brand podcast, Nyawira discussed the nuances of being a high-profile partner while maintaining an individual professional identity.

The Struggle with a Public Label

For years, the public naturally extended the “Mkurugenzi” brand—built by her husband, filmmaker and content creator Abel Mutua—to her. However, Judy revealed that being addressed as “Bi Mkurugenzi” initially caused significant discomfort. She felt the title reduced her entire existence to being the wife of a “fantastic man,” overshadowing her own contributions and personality.

During the early years of this public association, Nyawira made a conscious effort to correct anyone who used the title, quietly but firmly insisting on being called by her legal name. She described this as a deliberate act of reclaiming her individuality against a narrative that sought to define her solely through her marriage.
