MC Exodus: From House Help to TikTok Sensation — The Inspiring Rise of Eric Obuya
Eric Obuya, aka MC Exodus, has become a beloved online figure in Kenya, winning hearts with his humorous, relatable skits and boundless energy. Today, he boasts over a million followers on TikTok, with thousands more across other platforms. But behind the laughter lies a powerful story of resilience, grit, and humble beginnings.
In a recent candid interview on Radio 47, MC Exodus opened up about his journey, tracing it back to a life-changing encounter during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. It was then that he met veteran broadcaster Alex Mwakideu—a moment he now credits as a major turning point in his life.
“You were the first person who inspired me, and this is the result you see today,” he told Mwakideu.
“During the Corona period, I told you I had a talent for broadcasting. You said I needed something concrete to present before you could help—and that advice stayed with me.”
From Broadcasting Dreams to Digital Stardom
Though he’s now a household name in comedy, MC Exodus originally dreamed of becoming a journalist, with radio as his main passion. His quick wit and storytelling skills hinted at future success, though his journey to the limelight was anything but straightforward.
Exodus shared that his comedic style draws inspiration from both Kenyan and international creators. One of his standout trademarks—the repeated “eh?” in his skits—actually originated from a personal quirk.
“I used to have this habit of not hearing people clearly, and I’d always say ‘eh?’ I turned that into part of my comedy, and it stuck,” he explained with a laugh.
Humble Beginnings and Relentless Hustle
Long before the fame, Exodus arrived in Nairobi armed only with ambition and hope. One of his earliest jobs was as a house help—work he didn’t stay in for long. With few options, he hustled hard to survive, taking up whatever gigs he could find. His persistence paid off as he began collaborating with well-known figures such as Mama Kayai and Mogaka, connecting him to audiences who had grown up watching Kenyan screen legends.
Those collaborations marked a turning point. They not only amplified his visibility but also allowed him to bridge generations, appealing to both nostalgic older fans and the vibrant Gen Z TikTok crowd.
A Churchill Dream Deferred
One of MC Exodus’s early ambitions was to perform on the iconic Churchill Show, Kenya’s premier comedy platform. He recounted how a kind employer once paid for his ticket to attend the show, but the distance from Athi River to Nairobi’s recording venues repeatedly made it impossible for him to make auditions.
“I missed several opportunities just because of the distance,” he said. “But I never stopped trying.”
Though that dream didn’t materialize then, Exodus carved a new path—one rooted in digital content creation. Through short skits packed with humor and heart, he’s now living out his dream on his own terms.
From cleaning homes to commanding millions of views, MC Exodus is more than just a comedian—he’s a testament to what can happen when talent meets tenacity. And as his platform continues to grow, so does his ability to inspire countless others chasing their own dreams.
