Religious Leaders Hold Prayer Session at Malindi Beach Following Summer Tides Festival

Religious leaders gathered at Lost Beach in Malindi for a prayer session aimed at what they described as restoring moral values in the community, days after the controversial Summer Tides festival drew widespread public attention.

During the gathering, the clergy said they were praying against what they termed the “spirit of prostitution,” “sexual immorality,” and “sodomy,” alleging that such practices had taken place during the beach event. They also prayed against public nudity and called on residents to uphold the moral values of the coastal community.

“We came to curse the spirit of prostitution and the spirit of sodomy that happened here. We cannot allow our community to lose its morals,” one of the religious leaders said.

Warning to Future Organisers

Some members of the clergy also issued strong warnings to individuals they claimed might organise, sponsor or promote future editions of the festival.

They prayed that those associated with such events would face consequences, expressing hope that Malindi would instead experience moral and spiritual restoration.

Another religious leader appealed to parents and guardians to closely monitor their children, noting that many attendees at such events are young adults who may be susceptible to negative influences.

Festival Sparked National Debate

The prayer meeting comes in the wake of widespread public debate surrounding the Summer Tides festival, which attracted significant attention after videos recorded at the beach circulated widely on social media.

Supporters of the event described it as a celebration of entertainment, music and youth culture. However, critics argued that some of the activities depicted in the videos were inconsistent with the values and traditions of the local community.

Kenyans Divided

The prayer gathering also generated mixed reactions online, with Kenyans expressing differing opinions.

While some social media users praised the religious leaders for taking a stand on what they view as declining moral standards, others argued that the focus should instead be on promoting responsible behaviour through education, dialogue and law enforcement rather than public condemnation.

The contrasting reactions underscore the broader national conversation about balancing entertainment, individual freedoms and community values.
