Car dealer and entrepreneur Khalif Kairo has candidly shared why he feels unlucky in love and why he’s putting romance on hold for the foreseeable future.
In an appearance on the Let Me Tell You Maina podcast with veteran Classic105 FM host Maina Kageni, Kairo addressed widespread assumptions about his recent breakup with former Miss Universe Kenya, Maria Wavinya. Contrary to speculation that Wavinya left him during his legal troubles, Kairo clarified that she stood by him through the ordeal—from his arrest to the trial.
“The idea that she left me during my lowest point isn’t true,” Kairo said. “We simply broke up, and it had nothing to do with the court case. Maria was there for me. In fact, I was the one who asked her not to attend the court sessions.”
Kairo, who is known for his high-profile lifestyle and fast-paced business life, admitted that his demanding schedule made it difficult to maintain the relationship.
“Our breakup wasn’t about drama or issues—we just drifted. I’m always up early and working, and relationships demand attention. If you can’t give that, things fall apart. Women value presence and attention, and when that’s missing, problems begin,” he explained.
He further revealed that the split was driven by his own realization that he may not be in the right mental or emotional space to be in a relationship right now.
“At this point in my life, I don’t think I’m cut out for relationships—not until I achieve the goals God has set for me. Maybe once I reach that stage, I’ll be better equipped for love. But for now, it’s very complicated,” Kairo said.
When asked about his involvement in his child’s life, Kairo acknowledged that co-parenting hasn’t been smooth and hinted at tension with his child’s mother.
“It’s tricky,” he admitted. “I’m not good at relationships, and women are complex. I’m a logical person, but emotions and moods can really make things challenging. Last year was actually my first time dating in three years.”
Following his brief relationship with Wavinya, Kairo has resolved to take a long break from the dating scene.
“I’ve made the decision to step away from relationships and focus entirely on my business. Right now, I’m all about selling cars. Dating is not in my plans at all,” he stated firmly.
Looking ahead, Kairo emphasized that his energy will be directed toward his career and personal growth. He even joked that dealing with difficult clients is easier than navigating emotional relationships.
“After everything I’ve gone through, I’m more motivated than ever to succeed. I keep praying for strength and wisdom. Relationships can be a huge distraction—and honestly, I’d rather deal with an angry customer than a moody girlfriend,” he concluded.
