MC Jesse discusses his past as a hair-stylist and how Nameless changed his trajectory

Kenyan comedian and media personality MC Jessy has shared a humorous and emotional story about his early struggles in Nairobi, revealing how celebrated musician Nameless unknowingly became part of his hustle journey.

In a detailed Facebook post shared on Sunday, May 24, 2026, MC Jessy reflected on the difficult days when he was desperately searching for work in Nairobi and surviving through small jobs while trying to build his career.

According to the comedian, he once worked at a salon in Nairobi’s CBD owned by his longtime friend Juvinaris Kyalo, where he was assigned various duties, including washing clients’ hair after styling sessions.

“So, this guy called ‘Nameless’ is something else,” Jessy wrote humorously while recalling his “pilka pilka” days of job hunting in Nairobi.

He explained that life at the time was far from glamorous, and he often handled salon duties ranging from head massages to assisting with dreadlock maintenance for clients.

“Juvinaris akanipatia kazi ya kuosha watu nywele after amewatengeneza. Wamama wa Kiambu hapa nilikua nawapiga head massage safi sana mpaka karibu wanipee PIN ya M-Shwari,” he joked.

Jessy went on to reveal that Nameless happened to be one of the salon’s regular clients, especially for dreadlock grooming sessions. He recalled how he would sometimes avoid being the one assigned to wash the singer’s hair out of nervousness and awkwardness.

“Sasa… Nameless alikua client wetu wa dredi. Mimi nikiona tumekaribia kumaliza twisting, nahepa najifanya nimeenda choo ndio nisimuoshe,” he narrated.

However, he admitted that there were moments he got caught off guard and still ended up helping with the musician’s dreadlocks.

“Lakini saa zingine nilikua napatikana offguard najipata nikimsugua dredi. Sikumind sana juu alikua anatoboka ‘kamia mbili’ hivi,” he added humorously.

The comedian also reflected on the financial struggles he faced during that period, saying he owned very few clothes and was living a modest life as he chased opportunities in the city.

“Hiyo time maisha ilikua inanichezea kalongolongo kidogo… Nilikua na T-shirt mbili: moja ya ‘Kimbo’ na ingine ya ‘Safaricom.’ Na jeans mbili za ‘Savco,’” he shared.

Jessy described Nameless as a major celebrity even back then, noting that he admired the musician’s confidence, style, and success from a distance while quietly trying to survive Nairobi life.

The story has since amused many fans online, with many praising MC Jessy for openly sharing the humble beginnings behind his successful entertainment career.

MC Jessy defies MCSK’s financial demands: ‘Let them arrest me if they want’

MC Jessy, has called out the Music Copyright Society of Kenya (MCSK) for demanding a Ksh200,000 payment ahead of his upcoming comedy show.

“I received a very threatening call, and I even have a recording. They said if we don’t pay Ksh200,000 to MCSK, we won’t be allowed to hold the show. They even claimed I’d be arrested if we went ahead with it. It was a disrespectful call; I felt belittled as an artist,” he said.

The comedian questioned the basis for MCSK’s demand, especially since his performance does not rely on music.

“My question is, how did they come up with that figure? They assumed I’ll play Kenyan music. I told them, ‘Who told you I’m going to play music?’” he recounted.

Refusal to Pay

MC Jessy clarified that while he plans to incorporate Kenyan music into his comedy routine, he would prefer to compensate the individual artists directly rather than paying MCSK.

“I’ll contact the artists and ask how much I should pay them directly. I know they’d earn more that way than by going through MCSK. So, I will not pay MCSK. Let them come and arrest me,” he stated defiantly.

He added that the demand has created unnecessary pressure as he works to ensure the event’s success, noting the financial strain he has already endured in organizing and promoting the show.

“I’ve spent a lot to make this event successful. Now they’re telling me I’ll be arrested if I proceed with my own comedy show without paying Ksh200,000,” he shared on Instagram.

“Jesse, what’s your stand on this Finance Bill? I’ve scrolled through your account and haven’t seen any indication that you reject it,” Khaligraph questioned.

The comedian responded, acknowledging his support for the current government while expressing his disagreement with certain policies.

“My brother, it’s true, I campaigned for this government openly. I was at the forefront in celebration when William Ruto won. There is video evidence of that,” he explained.

He continued, “At that time, I was very hopeful for his administration. I believed my agenda for the creative economy would be achieved. Our CS for Creative has not done what is needed for creatives, and he knows that very well. I am also tired of pushing them, tired of just talks and promises.”
