Singer and songwriter Nviiri Sande, widely known as Nviiri the Storyteller, has publicly revealed his decision to abandon using smartphones as a deliberate strategy to protect his mental health and significantly reduce daily distractions.
Speaking during a local podcast on Thursday, December 4, 2025, Nviiri shared that the transition was not impulsive but rather an intentional move that he had spent considerable time reflecting and praying about.
The artist explained that constant screen time, particularly the consumption of social media, had become overwhelming and detrimental to his focus.
“Most of these things, funny enough, I just prayed about them. To separate myself from these things that distract me. We spend too much time on Instagram from morning till night, I lose a lot of time watching movies, and I have seen a lot of distraction happen online,” he admitted.
Intentional Living in Limuru
Nviiri emphasized that safeguarding his mind required being intentional about the content he consumes. To solidify his change, he switched to a simple Nokia phone and relocated from Nairobi to Limuru, seeking a calmer and more peaceful lifestyle.
“If you have to protect your mind, you have to figure out what you feed your head. I have a good team who understand when I had to put a lot of caution in place,” he said, demonstrating the simple device.
By limiting his online interactions, the artist reported gaining immense clarity, increased productivity, and a deeper presence in his daily life and work.
Connecting with the Real World
One of the most surprising and fulfilling benefits of his digital detox has been the ability to spend more intentional time with animals on his farm, leading to unexpected insights and a stronger connection with the natural world.
“Part of what I gained a lot by doing this is that I was able to predict the time the animals we have are going to give birth and to the precision what they need. It helps you to understand how you interact with human beings. I can be more present to understand if you are hungry or not,” he explained.
Nviiri concluded by stressing his belief that true meaning is not exclusively found online. He noted that slowing down has helped him focus on real connections, real work, and real experiences, affirming that those who truly need to reach him still find a way, and his work continues productively.
