Media Council Raises Alarm Over ‘Sensationalism’ at Standard Group

The Media Council of Kenya has raised concerns over what it describes as a pattern of sensational reporting and ethical breaches by the Standard Group, warning that such practices risk eroding public trust in the media.

In a press statement issued on March 24, 2026, the Council cited a recent front-page headline alleging that former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju had been abducted – a claim it says lacked factual verification.

The report was published before Tuju later reappeared safely, raising questions about editorial standards and verification processes.

According to the Council, the incident reflects a broader trend where provocative headlines are prioritised over accuracy.

It argues that repeated use of unverified claims and failure to offer the right of reply amount to violations of the Code of Conduct for Media Practice.

The regulator warned that such editorial approaches risk undermining not just individual credibility, but the wider media ecosystem.

Trust and sustainability at stake

The Council cautioned that while sensational headlines may attract short-term attention, they weaken long-term public trust.

Once credibility is lost, it noted, both the social and commercial standing of a media house can be significantly affected.

It also pushed back against criticism directed at the regulator, stating that enforcing professional standards should not be interpreted as interference or censorship.

In its closing remarks, the Council urged the Standard Group’s editorial leadership to return to core journalistic principles, including fact-checking before publication and respecting the right of reply.

It reaffirmed its position that Kenya’s media must remain both bold and truthful, warning that sensationalism at the expense of accuracy undermines the integrity of the profession and the democratic space.

Raphael Tuju Resurfaces As He Narrates Ordeal

Former Cabinet Secretary Raphael Tuju has broken his silence following a missing person report that sparked national concern. Speaking to the press on Monday, March 23, 2026, a visibly shaken but grateful Tuju recounted a harrowing ordeal involving an unidentified vehicle that forced him into hiding.

The incident began on Saturday evening while Tuju was en route to a scheduled interview at Ramogi FM. Tuju, who often prefers to drive himself, noticed he was being followed by a vehicle without license plates—a detail that particularly alarmed him given previous police encounters at his home involving unmarked Land Rovers.

By the time Tuju reached the Karen Roundabout, the suspicious vehicle had closed the gap, positioned “back-to-back” with his car. Utilizing his intimate knowledge of the Karen suburbs, Tuju made a sudden turn into Nandi Road. The layout of the road forced his pursuers to either face oncoming traffic or take a long detour, providing the crucial seconds Tuju needed to vanish.

Seeking Refuge

After successfully shaking off the tail, Tuju took the drastic step of abandoning his vehicle along the road. He sought immediate shelter with a local family who took him in, providing a safe haven throughout Sunday. Tuju expressed deep relief during the presser, stating he is grateful to be alive in light of recent reported deaths across the country.

Context of Concern

This was not an isolated fear for the former Jubilee Secretary General. Tuju revealed that he had already filed a formal police report and shared the specific report number with the press, noting that he had been followed in the days leading up to Saturday. He remained with the Good Samaritan family until Sunday night before finally returning to his residence and surfacing publicly on Monday morning.

Former CS Raphael Tuju Returns To News Anchor Desk At KTN’s ‘Legends Edition’

Former Cabinet Secretary and media veteran Raphael Tuju is set to make a nostalgic return to television as a news anchor for a special broadcast on KTN.

Tuju will anchor tomorrow’s 9 pm prime-time bulletin as part of KTN’s “Legends Edition,” a milestone broadcast marking the station’s 35th anniversary. His return is expected to evoke memories of the early 90s when Kenya’s media landscape was just beginning to diversify.

The Return of a Broadcasting Icon

Raphael Tuju’s career in broadcasting is illustrious: he began as a journalist for the state-run Voice of Kenya (VOK), now KBC, before moving to the newly launched Kenya Television Network (KTN). Notably, Tuju was the first news anchor to appear on KTN when it was launched in 1990, before he transitioned into the political arena.

Politician and businessman Steve Mwanga, who witnessed Tuju’s initial rise, fondly recalled his unparalleled screen presence:

“Tuju embodied the news. His presence was unmistakable. He was a broadcaster designed for the screen and remembered long after the bulletin ended. The camera loved him, the poise of a man completely at ease in the public eye. Add to that, a crisp, cultivated accent and a diction so clean it seemed almost sculpted.”

From Anchor to Political Leader

Tuju’s influence extended beyond the news desk. He worked as a television producer and communications consultant before joining politics. He is also credited with expanding the space for more independent media stations, notably serving as the Minister of Information and Communications when the NARC government came to power in 2003, before later becoming the Minister for Tourism and Wildlife.

In 2008, he was appointed by former President Mwai Kibaki as a special advisor on Media and Diversity Management.

KTN’s “Legends Edition” will celebrate the station’s rich history, which produced many legendary figures, including the late Catherine Kasavuli, Louis Otieno, Beatrice Marshall, Maina Kageni, Swaleh Mdoe, and many others.

Raphael Tuju’s reaction to Moses Kuria’s bid to launch manhunt for Kiambu voters who voted for Raila

Gatundu South MP, who is infamous for making obnoxious statements on social media, has once again sparked uproar after he announced his intention of hunting down Raila’s supporters in Kiambu county.

Kuria anounced his outragious plan on Facebook where he stated that all residents in Kiambu must vote for Uhuru Kenyatta.

“Kiambu has spoken. They have said Wembe ni Ule Ule. Wangige and Kiambu people are seething with anger. 1 Million of their votes were cancelled by 4 people. But they are so ready to do it again. And even more. Manhunt is on tonight for the 200,000 people who did not vote and the 70,000 that voted for that other demon,” Moses Kuria posted on Facebook.

Jubilee Party’s Secretary General Raphael Tuju blasted the Gatundu South MP over his post on Facebook while speaking on NTV’s Sidebar.

Tuju stated that Jubilee party wouldn’t accept to be put on the spot by mistakes of a few elements in the party who were are preaching the wrong message to the country. He further stated that he would take up the matter with Kuria himself.

“Moses Kuria is out of order and I will not accept this kind of language. If it is true it is from his official Facebook page, then I will take it up with him because it is unacceptable. Simple, and it cannot be Jubilee policy. We cannot be put on the spot by mistakes of a few elements in the party which are preaching the wrong thing for this country. I can say that without any fear or confliction,” Tuju said in part.
