Harambee Stars Coach McCarthy Challenges Tanzanian National Team After Great Performance

In a press conference following the Harambee Stars’ impressive World Cup qualifier win, former Manchester United coach Bennie McCarthy praised his players for their sharp display but couldn’t resist taking a light-hearted jab at rival nation Tanzania.

“We have a little boost and we would like to have a mini-tournament where we would like to invite Tanzania,” McCarthy joked, sparking laughter from the reporters.

The comments came just after Tanzania had suffered a defeat to Niger in their own qualifier. McCarthy went on to suggest that other East African teams like Uganda and Rwanda could also join the friendly competition but made it clear that Tanzania was the top priority.

“It would be nice to break bread on the football pitch – but Tanzania first,” he said.

The playful comments quickly spread online, tapping into the long-standing friendly rivalry that has existed between the two East African nations. The rivalry, which extends beyond football into culture and even politics, makes any win over the other particularly sweet for fans. McCarthy’s humorous jab became a viral moment that perfectly captured the competitive spirit.

Bahati Pledges KSh 1 Million to Harambee Stars — Explains Delay After Historic Win Over Morocco

Kevin Bahati and his wife, Diana Marua, had promised to reward the Harambee Stars with KSh 1 million if they defeated Morocco in their crucial African Nations Championship (CHAN) 2024 match on Saturday, August 9.

The couple made the pledge publicly before kick-off, with Bahati assuring fans he would hand over the cash immediately if the team triumphed.

On Sunday, August 10, the Stars delivered a thrilling 1-0 victory at the Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani, courtesy of Ryan Ogam’s winning goal. But while celebrations swept across the country, some supporters began asking why Bahati’s promised reward had not yet reached the players.

Bahati Responds to Fans

Addressing the growing speculation, Bahati shared a video from his home wearing a Harambee Stars jersey and holding what appeared to be the KSh 1 million in cash.

He explained that CAF (Confederation of African Football) regulations had prevented him from entering the changing rooms after the match to personally deliver the gift.

“I promised to gift Harambee Stars KSh 1 million. I’m not very rich, but this gift must go directly into the players’ hands. Because of CAF rules, I couldn’t access the changing rooms after the game. I’m a man of my word, so let me call Mariga and arrange the delivery,” he said.

Bahati then phoned Football Kenya Federation (FKF) deputy chairperson McDonald Mariga, who informed him the squad was on a short break. They agreed the handover would take place during training.

Opting to present the gift on the training pitch to avoid any protocol breaches, Bahati joked:

“Naweza kasirika nilete ikiwa KSh 3 million.”

In his caption, the singer reaffirmed his promise:

“AHADI NI DENI!!! Just spoke with FKF Deputy Chairperson @Mariga77. He has allowed us to hand over the KSh 1 million to the Harambee Stars players. As CEO of Bahati.Bet, I am committed to supporting the Stars until we win this CHAN.”

Matchday Chaos and Upcoming Zambia Clash

Attention now shifts to Kenya’s next fixture against Zambia on Sunday, August 17. The Morocco game had been overshadowed by chaotic scenes as fans without tickets breached security — the third such incident after the DR Congo and Angola matches.

In response, CAF reduced Kasarani’s capacity to 60%, limiting attendance for the Zambia match to 27,000 tickets. Ticket sales, temporarily halted during a security review, reopened on Tuesday morning and sold out almost instantly.

Adding to the drama, confusion arose over kick-off time. CAF’s website initially listed 8 pm, while printed tickets showed 3 pm. FKF’s Head of Communications, Jeff Kinyanjui, later confirmed the correct time as 3 pm EAT, and CAF updated its listings accordingly.

Kenya’s Quarter-Final Push

The victory over Morocco has boosted Kenya’s hopes of reaching the CHAN quarter-finals. The final group-stage matches — Kenya vs Zambia at Kasarani and DR Congo vs Morocco at Nyayo Stadium — will kick off simultaneously, with the Stars aiming to secure the points needed to advance.

MP Peter Salasya Pledges Three Months’ Rent To Harambee Stars Goalkeeper

Following the Harambee Stars’ recent impressive performance, Mumias East Member of Parliament Peter Salasya has made a notable pledge to the team’s goalkeeper, promising to cover three months of his rent. The gesture, announced on social media, comes in recognition of the goalkeeper’s exceptional performance, which was crucial to the national team’s victory.

The goalkeeper’s standout performance in the match against a formidable opponent was widely hailed as heroic, with his series of crucial saves preventing the opposing team from scoring. His efforts were instrumental in securing a vital win for the Harambee Stars, injecting a fresh sense of hope and pride into the national football community.

In a public message, MP Salasya expressed his admiration for the goalkeeper’s skills and dedication. The specific promise to pay for three months’ rent was a tangible and personal way of rewarding the player for his on-field heroics. While the gesture was praised by many for its generosity and for supporting local talent, it also drew criticism from a section of the public who accused the MP of seeking political mileage from a national sporting moment.

The MP’s pledge, regardless of the mixed reactions, has brought a spotlight to the financial realities faced by many local athletes. It has sparked a broader conversation about the need for more consistent support and better compensation for national sports heroes from both government bodies and the private sector. Salasya’s gesture, while specific, highlights the public’s desire to see athletes properly celebrated and rewarded for their efforts. The public will now be watching to see if the promise is fulfilled, with many hoping it sets a precedent for better recognition of Kenya’s sporting heroes.

Ruto Unveils Mega Incentives for Harambee Stars After Historic CHAN Progress

President William Ruto has raised the stakes for Kenya’s Harambee Stars, announcing a lucrative package of rewards as the team advances to the knockout stages of the African Nations Championship (CHAN).

The pledge came after Kenya’s hard-fought win over Morocco, which secured their historic spot in the next round. Meeting the squad at the Pullman Hotel in Upper Hill, Nairobi, on Monday, August 11, 2025, Ruto praised the players’ resilience and urged them to push even harder in the matches ahead.

Fresh Rewards to Keep the Momentum
Ruto outlined a new set of high-value incentives:

  • Sunday’s clash against Zambia – KSh 2.5 million for each player if they win.

  • Quarter-final bonus – KSh 1 million per player, plus a two-bedroom affordable housing unit in a location of their choice.

Building on Earlier Promises
These offers add to generous pledges made earlier in the tournament. Ahead of the group stage, Ruto promised KSh 1 million per player for a win, KSh 500,000 for a draw, and lump-sum team rewards of KSh 60 million for reaching the quarter-finals, KSh 70 million for the semi-finals, and an unprecedented KSh 600 million for winning the title.

The President has already followed through on previous commitments. After the victory over DR Congo, KSh 42 million was paid out—KSh 1 million each to 27 players and 15 technical staff.

Inspiration Beyond Borders
The announcement has drawn admiration across East Africa. One Ugandan football fan lauded the move, saying:

“Wow! You’re an amazing and practical president. Local-based players earn very little in our domestic leagues and work under tough conditions. Rewarding them for their effort and sacrifice is inspiring. It proves resilience always pays.”

With Kenya riding high in CHAN, the President’s latest incentives are expected to further fire up the squad as they eye continental glory.

Money Motivation-Harambee Stars Bag Millions After Impressive Morocco Victory

Harambee Stars, are celebrating more than just their recent on-field success after it was announced they have received a significant financial bonus following their crucial victory over Morocco. The players, who put on a masterful performance, have been rewarded with millions of shillings, a move aimed at recognizing their hard work and boosting morale.

The team’s stunning 2-1 victory against a formidable Moroccan side in a tightly contested World Cup qualifier match sent a wave of excitement across the country. The win was hailed as one of the team’s most impressive recent performances, with the Harambee Stars displaying resilience, tactical discipline, and a fighting spirit that earned them three crucial points in their campaign. The victory not only put them in a strong position in the qualifiers but also served as a major confidence booster.

In a move that has been widely applauded by fans and commentators, the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) and the Ministry of Sports announced that the team would be rewarded for their efforts. The players, coaching staff, and technical bench were all beneficiaries of the bonus, with the funds meant to be a direct incentive for future stellar performances. This financial gesture signals a renewed commitment by football authorities to adequately support and motivate the national team, a practice that has been a point of contention in the past.

The bonus comes at a critical time, as the Harambee Stars prepare for their next series of matches. The victory over Morocco has injected a fresh sense of optimism into the team and its supporters, and the financial reward is seen as a tangible demonstration of the value of their hard work. It is hoped that this positive momentum will continue to propel the team forward as they aim to qualify for the prestigious World Cup tournament.

The Stadium Vibe: Kenya’s CHAN Experience Is Now World-Class

If you thought matchday in Kenya was still all dust, chaos, and a prayer for clean seats, think again.

At CHAN 2024, Kenya has gone big – and the fans are feeling it.

From the moment you grab your digital ticket to the second you slide into a surprisingly comfy seat at Nyayo or Kasarani Stadiums, you can tell something has shifted.

This is no longer just football.

It’s a full-blown stadium vibe.

Gone are the days of nervously scanning the crowd for rowdy fans.

In their place?

Families, couples, teens in Harambee Stars face paint, and even aunties belting chants like seasoned ultras.

It’s patriotic, it’s electric – and most importantly, it feels safe.

That’s no accident.

A layered security system (thanks to keen policy makers at the Ministry of Interior) means every fan walks in knowing the rules, seeing the personnel, and trusting the process.

Clean grounds, orderly seating, and a tightly run show make going to the stadium not just fun but refreshingly easy.

And for the players? Everything’s leveled up.

They’re stepping onto pristine, pro-grade pitches, backed by the buzz of fans who actually get the game.

And with VAR now in the mix, the drama is not just on the ball but on the screen too.

Football purists and casual fans alike are locked in – and they’re loving it.

Make no mistake: This isn’t just a sporting event – it’s a showcase of what Kenya is capable of.

We’ve delivered on infrastructure, on vibe, on hospitality. And with AFCON 2027 on the horizon, the message is loud and clear:

We’re ready.

CHAN 2025: Turning Local Dreams Into Global Stories

They didn’t grow up in elite academies with shiny boots and personal trainers.

They mastered the ball on dusty pitches, city backstreets, and village tournaments.

Welcome to CHAN 2025 – the tournament that proves you don’t have to come from privilege to make history.

From the Estate Pitch to the World Stage

In a country where talent bubbles in every village pitch and county tournament, CHAN is more than just another continental tournament – it’s a mirror reflecting the face of Kenyan football.

It’s the boda rider’s son, the kibanda owner’s daughter, the boy from Mukuru, the quiet talent from Kisumu – all finally getting their moment under the floodlights.

And at the heart of this CHAN chapter are names that already feel legendary:

Striker Austin Odhiambo, scored Harambee Star’s first CHAN 2025 goal. (Image: Files)

Austin Odhiambo: The Left-Footed Assassin

Before he was trending on sports pages, Austin was lighting up community tournaments like the Olunga Foundation Cup.

The boy from the block with that left-foot magic.

In 2024, the world watched him make Kenya’s first-ever CHAN goal – a stunning match-winner against DR Congo that sent fans into delirium.

But beyond the stats, it was the moment itself: the roar, the disbelief, the pride.

Austin’s story isn’t just about football – it’s about what’s possible when we nurture what’s ours.

Alpha Chris Onyango: The Budding Midfield Maestro

He’s calm under pressure, tactical like a chessmaster, and gritty like a true son of Nairobi’s streets.

From casual neighbourhood football to the Gor Mahia youth system, Alpha Onyango has earned his stripes.

Guided by legends like Michael Olunga and Anthony Akumu, he grew into a midfield engine with eyes everywhere.

At CHAN 2025, his brilliance was clear.

Man of the Match against DR Congo, Alpha completed over 30 passes, broke up play and bossed the midfield like a veteran.

CHAN has given him a springboard – and the whispers of a continental transfer are already growing louder.

It’s a Big Deal in Kenya Right Now

Because when we talk about grassroots, we’re not talking about charity.

We’re talking about smart nation-building.

These players are proof that Kenya’s football future isn’t locked in fancy academies – it’s alive in our counties, our estates, our dusty school fields.

CHAN is the global stage that proves it.

Today’s unknown can become tomorrow’s national hero.

Today’s CHAN goal could become tomorrow’s international headline.

Final Whistle: The Next Star Is Still Rising

As CHAN 2025 marches on, don’t just watch the scores.

Watch the stories.

Celebrate the grit.

Share the magic.

These aren’t just footballers – they’re dreams in motion, and they carry the hopes of every kid who’s ever juggled a ball in the mud and whispered:

“One day, I’ll play for Kenya.”

And now? That day has come.

Harambee Stars Awarded Ksh42 Million After Historic CHAN Victory Over DR Congo

Kenya’s national football team, the Harambee Stars, has received a substantial financial reward following their landmark 1-0 win over the Democratic Republic of Congo in their opening match of the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) on Sunday, August 3.

The Kenyan government has confirmed the disbursement of Ksh42 million, fulfilling a promise by President William Ruto aimed at motivating the team throughout the tournament.

A Historic Win at Kasarani

The Moi International Sports Centre, Kasarani was packed with jubilant fans as the Harambee Stars secured a hard-fought victory. A first-half goal by midfielder Austin Odhiambo proved decisive, earning Kenya its first-ever win in the CHAN finals, a historic milestone for both the team and the nation.

Breakdown of the Ksh42 Million Reward

According to State House spokesperson Hussein Mohammed, the entire Ksh42 million was shared among 27 players and 15 technical staff members. Each individual received Ksh1 million in line with President Ruto’s pledge of Ksh1 million per player for every match won during the CHAN tournament.

“The president had pledged a million shillings per player for a win. He has since released Sh42 million for the 27 players and 15 members of the technical bench,” Hussein Mohammed confirmed.

A Larger Promise: Ksh600 Million If Kenya Reaches CHAN Final

The Ksh42 million disbursement is part of a broader incentive package. Before the tournament, President Ruto promised Ksh600 million if the Harambee Stars reach the CHAN final—an unprecedented commitment aimed at boosting morale and performance.

While many Kenyans welcomed the reward as a strong show of support, some raised concerns over its sustainability, especially given the financial struggles of local football clubs and the state of sports infrastructure in the country.

National Unity and Rising Stakes

Beyond the cash, the win over DR Congo ignited national pride and united Kenyans across political and social divides. The reward signals a growing trend in African football, where governments use financial incentives to motivate national teams and boost performance on the continental stage.

As the tournament progresses, Harambee Stars will aim to build on this victory and chase further glory—and rewards—in the coming matches. The team’s next fixture will be closely watched, with fans and officials hopeful for continued success.

Harambee Stars Shine in CHAN Victory as Goalkeeper Faruk Shikalo Makes Direct Plea to President Ruto

Kenya’s national football team, the Harambee Stars, kicked off their African Nations Championship (CHAN) campaign on a high note with an impressive victory over DR Congo on Sunday, August 3, 2025. The win not only boosted their prospects in the tournament but also set the stage for a rare and meaningful interaction between the players and President William Ruto.

A Memorable Victory and a Moment of Advocacy

Following the match, the Harambee Stars squad met with President Ruto, a gesture that was initially part of the post-match celebrations. However, the moment took a more impactful turn when goalkeeper Faruk Shikalo made a heartfelt and direct appeal to the Head of State regarding the Affordable Housing Programme.

“I, as Faruk, have one request,” Shikalo said as he shook hands with the President. “Please remember us on these affordable houses coming up.”

President Ruto responded positively, assuring the players that their appeal would be addressed. “I know how I will arrange that. If it is affordable houses you want, I will make arrangements,” he said.

CHAN: A Platform for Local Talent

The African Nations Championship (CHAN), organized by the Confederation of African Football (CAF), is distinct from the more famous Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). It is exclusively reserved for players who compete in their home country’s domestic leagues, offering a rare opportunity for local talent to shine on a continental stage.

Held every two years, CHAN’s mission is to boost the visibility and competitiveness of domestic leagues across Africa. For players like Faruk Shikalo and his teammates, performing well in CHAN could open doors to international careers and greater recognition at home.

Spotlight on Kenya’s Affordable Housing Programme

The Affordable Housing Programme is a flagship project of the Kenyan government, aimed at addressing the country’s chronic housing shortage. Launched under the Big Four Agenda, the initiative seeks to deliver thousands of low-cost housing units, with a focus on making homeownership accessible for low and middle-income earners.

By requesting inclusion in the programme, Shikalo underscored the players’ desire not only for national representation on the pitch but also for economic security and stability off it.

A Symbolic Exchange Beyond Sports

Shikalo’s direct appeal resonated with many Kenyans, highlighting how public platforms can be used to advocate for broader social issues. The President’s pledge to “make arrangements” for the team signals potential consideration for athletes in national housing priorities.

As the Harambee Stars continue their CHAN campaign, their on-field efforts are now intertwined with a powerful off-field message — one that calls for recognition of athletes’ contributions and support for their well-being.

Whether Shikalo’s request translates into concrete action remains to be seen, but his bold move has already sparked a national conversation about the intersection of sports, livelihoods, and public policy in Kenya.

Harambee Stars Goalkeeper Embroiled in Match-Fixing Scandal

A storm has erupted in Kenyan football as Harambee Stars goalkeeper Patrick Matasi finds himself at the center of a match-fixing scandal that threatens to tarnish the sport’s integrity in the country. A leaked video, which surfaced online on Thursday, March 27, allegedly shows Matasi negotiating with an unidentified individual to manipulate the outcome of a match, sending shockwaves through the football community and prompting swift action from the Football Kenya Federation (FKF). As of today, the fallout continues to unfold, with fans, players, and officials grappling with the implications of this explosive revelation.

The Leaked Video: A Damning Exchange

The footage, secretly recorded inside a stationary vehicle, captures Matasi seated in the right-back seat, engaged in a conversation with a man off-camera. The unidentified individual is heard issuing instructions, saying, “That first half, bro, what we want must come,” to which Matasi appears to nod in agreement. Another voice pleads, “This is the first deal, I beg you. You know how we have done this, I have never let you down, you have never let me down,” suggesting a history of trust—and possibly prior arrangements. The man promises to send payment immediately, with a follow-up call to confirm the transaction, sealing the alleged deal.
Though the exact date, location, and match in question remain unclear, the video’s emergence has cast a dark shadow over Matasi’s career. The 37-year-old goalkeeper, currently with Kakamega Homeboyz in the FKF Premier League, has been a mainstay for both club and country, earning a reputation as one of Kenya’s finest shot-stoppers. His storied tenure includes stints with AFC Leopards, Tusker FC, and Kenya Police FC, alongside consistent appearances for Harambee Stars, most recently in a 4-1 loss to Cameroon in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers last October.

A History of Suspicion

Matasi’s past performances have not been without scrutiny. Fans and analysts have long pointed to “schoolboy errors” and “soft goals” conceded during critical matches, fueling speculation of foul play. His outing against Cameroon, where he let in four goals—two deemed avoidable—drew particular ire, with some questioning his selection under then-coach Engin Firat. Earlier whispers of match-fixing dogged him during his time with various clubs, though no concrete evidence had surfaced until now. The leaked video has reignited these concerns, with many revisiting his record through a lens of suspicion.

FKF Responds: Investigation Underway

The Football Kenya Federation wasted no time addressing the scandal. In a statement released hours after the video went viral, FKF confirmed it had launched an official investigation in collaboration with FIFA, the Confederation of African Football (CAF), and other relevant authorities.
FKF upholds the integrity of football and has a zero-tolerance policy on match manipulation. We are committed to safeguarding the credibility of our competitions and will ensure a fair, transparent, and thorough process.
The federation urged anyone with additional information to come forward, emphasizing that the rights of Matasi and his club would be respected pending the investigation’s outcome. If found guilty, Matasi could face severe penalties under FIFA and CAF regulations, including a lifetime ban from football, hefty fines, or even criminal charges, as match-fixing is illegal in many jurisdictions. For Kenyan football, the stakes are equally high—sponsors and investors may recoil from a sport mired in controversy, further stunting its growth.

Olunga’s Disbelief and Team Fallout

Harambee Stars captain Michael Olunga, a towering figure in Kenyan football, reacted with visceral disbelief. Taking to social media, he posted a terse “F*** off” followed by three wide-eyed emojis, a rare public outburst from the typically reserved striker. His response mirrors the shock felt by teammates and fans alike, many of whom see Matasi as a veteran leader whose alleged actions could fracture team morale.
Matasi’s most recent move to Kakamega Homeboyz in January 2025 had been seen as a fresh start after a rocky spell with Kenya Police, but this scandal now jeopardizes his club standing as well. Homeboyz chairman Cleophas Shimanyula has defended his player, insisting Matasi is “innocent until proven guilty,” but the pressure is mounting as the club braces for potential backlash.

The Bigger Picture: Kenyan Football at a Crossroads

This isn’t the first time match-fixing has reared its head in Kenyan football. In 2019, former Harambee Stars player George “Wise” Owino was implicated in a FIFA investigation detailing a scandal that rocked the sport, though it faded from public view without major convictions. The current allegations against Matasi threaten to expose deeper systemic issues—poor oversight, financial desperation among players, and a lack of robust safeguards against corruption.
For Harambee Stars, already struggling in their 2026 World Cup and 2025 AFCON qualifying campaigns, the timing couldn’t be worse. Coach Benni McCarthy, appointed earlier this month, has been tasked with rebuilding a team plagued by inconsistency and off-field drama. A 3-3 draw with Gambia and a 2-1 loss to Gabon in recent qualifiers showed promise but highlighted defensive frailties—some of which Matasi’s critics now attribute to more than mere error.

Mozzart hands Nick Mwendwa Ksh3M sponsorship deal as Harambee Stars face Mali at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday

From lower-tier clubs that receive help through the action “New Jerseys for New Champions” and numerous donations, to sponsorships of various teams, Mozzart has now entered into a partnership with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF).

Mozzart has actively been involved in distributing kits and other sporting equipment to grassroots teams countrywide, but also sponsoring grassroots tournaments, most notably the recent Dennis Oliech Cup and now continues to invest in sports.

The leading gaming firm has today announced a Ksh 3 Million sponsorship to the Kenyan National team, Harambee Stars!

The sponsorship is for the team’s 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers and the company effectively becomes Harambee Stars’ Motivational Partner during the same period.

Team Captain Michael Olunga thanked Mozzart for the gesture.

“We thank Mozzart for supporting the National team. It gives us great pleasure as players to know that we have an organization that believes in us. It is a huge motivation especially heading into such a crucial match on Sunday and our hope is that we will get more partners in the near future,” he said.

Harambee Stars Captain, Michael Olunga during the event.

“The ball is now our court as players to ensure that we do better on the pitch to ensure we give such partners value. On behalf of the team, I promise we will do our best,” he added.
Federation boss Nick Mwendwa echoed Olunga’s sentiments.

“We are very thankful to Mozzart. We were able to send the team to Morocco comfortably to face Mali and even though we did not get a good result, we believe this partnership will go a long way in motivating the players for the remaining three matches and my hope is we can come up with a long-term agrreement after this.” He said.

Mozzart Country Manager Sasa Krneta urged Harambee Stars to step up their game when they come up against Mali on Sunday at the Nyayo National Stadium.

“Mozzart has the interests of the Nation at heart and we share in the vision to improve the standards of football in Kenya and Harambee Stars performing better as a result.,” he said.

“This partnership with Harambee Stars is just for the World Cup qualifiers but we believe this is the right time to support the team and push it to do better. We believe in the project and know there’s potential of doing better.”

“As you go out to face Mali tomorrow, I want you to know that we are fully behind you and wish you the very best. TUNAWEZA!” he urged the team.”

Kenya takes on Mali on Sunday from 4PM EAT at Nyayo and will then travel away to face Uganda in a return match penciled for Thursday 11th November before welcoming Rwanda at home three days later.
