Ugandan artist Bebe Cool has been the subject of alot of pan-African conversation and none of it was in a positive light. But it is really hard for me to feel bad for him because he kind of put the target on his own back with some of his most recent shenanigans.

You see, Bebe Cool, like every other Ugandan artist, is subject to Uganda’s set of Covid19 lockdown rules. And as a result, he has been unable to hold or participate in any concerts or put on any shows. But he was oddly quiet when a Ugandan promoter announced that they were putting on a concert that would feature a Nigerian group of artists including Omah Ley and Tems. if we use our buruweins, we know that you have to market and push the event to ensure it was a success. Bebe Cool was silent the entire time the event was pushed -that is, until the eleventh hour.
When the Nigerian artists began to market the event as the date had arrived. They had already made travel arrangements and it was only then that Bebe Cool decided to object and very strongly at that. So what did he do? He took to social media and announced that he would not allow the concert to carry on given he and other Ugandan artists hadn’t been allowed to put up a concert. It would appear he actually went through with his threat. Because the concert went down and was a success. Omah Lay and terms along with their group put up the best possible show. Cue Bebe Cool’s nuclear option getting engaged.

Omah Lay and the rest were arrested and taken to jail. From there, they began the process of trying to get released and also to understand what they were being charged with. That was when Bebe Cool’s role in the entire fiasco came to the fore. And Africans the world over began to call him out. Nigerians were the most vociferous on the matter but that is understandable. My friend tells me they are ferocious about defending their own. But we now have to look at what lies ahead for Bebe Cool the fool.

Bebe Cool is going to have a tough time going forward with his music outside of Uganda. You see, his fellow artists are probably going to be lured to work with him if he pays them for a collaboration. He will, however, have a hard time pulling in fans and supporters for his music and art. I am sure he isn’t too perturbed about all this because he is one of Yoweri Museveni’s hired puppets so his prosperity is only tied to the health and power of Uganda’s dictator.

But can you imagine Bebe Cool being tasked to work with a continental company? Imagine him being signed on by Coke Studio to work with a Nigerian artist. Hilarious rally. Or can you imagine him having any further ambitions to become a musical icon in Africa and not just in Uganda? Laughable. This story even has an update. Bebe Cool tried going to the Nigerian High Commission in Uganda for some nonsense and he had was chased away like a dog.
