Former Harambee Stars captain Victor Wanyama has sent a wave of excitement through the Kenyan sporting community following the announcement of his latest venture: the Wanyama Football Academy.
Coming off the back of his professional retirement in early 2026, the legendary midfielder is transitioning into a long-term role as a developer of grassroots talent. Through a social media teaser branded “Wanyama Academy – Coming Soon,” the star confirmed that a new era for young Kenyan footballers is on the horizon.
A Tale of Two Hubs: Nairobi and Busia
The academy is designed as a sophisticated, multi-county project aimed at identifying and polishing talent from a young age.
-
The Nairobi Center: This will serve as the high-performance headquarters. Based in the capital, it will offer state-of-the-art facilities for advanced training and mentorship for elite youth prospects.
-
The Busia Foundation: Located on a massive 21-acre site in Nambale, this facility will serve as a boarding and training center. It is specifically designed to reach underserved regions, acting as the primary ground for talent identification and foundational growth.
Beyond the Pitch: Education and Discipline
The Wanyama Academy isn’t just about football; it’s a holistic development program. The project will target youth from the U13 to U17 levels, integrating formal education with intensive sports training. By featuring on-site dormitories and structured academic learning, the academy ensures that “future champions” are well-rounded individuals both on and off the field.
The “Coach Wanyama” Era
Wanyama is expected to take a very hands-on approach. Having already secured a UEFA B coaching license and currently pursuing his UEFA A License, the former Celtic and Tottenham star is equipped to lead training sessions personally.
He isn’t doing it alone, either. The project is being developed alongside his brother, McDonald Mariga, under the umbrella of the Victor Wanyama Foundation. Together, they aim to create structured scouting pathways and provide scholarships to ensure that financial status isn’t a barrier to sporting success.
A Major Step for Kenyan Football
Fans and aspiring athletes have hailed the move as a critical intervention for the local game. By combining international coaching partnerships with local mentorship, Wanyama is leveraging his global experience to build a “home for young talent” that could eventually provide the next generation of Harambee Stars.
As Wanyama himself put it: “Something special is coming… a new home for young talent, discipline, growth, and future champions. Stay tuned, the journey begins soon.”
